Possible 1997 Toyota Corolla Starter Problems

When I turn the key, I'll get just one good ''CLICK.'' And that's it. Sometimes the engine will turn half-way. Sometimes the engine will turn, but slowly. The problem comes and goes. Some days my car will start completely normally, other days it just goes ''CLICK'' and that's it.

My battery should still be good, it's only 2 years old, still has a lot of weight, and the terminals are clean.

My guess is my starter is beginning to die on me. If so, is replacing the starter a complex process? Can it be done without jacking up my car?

Do you by chance have a picture or diagram of the starter in the engine bay so I could locate it? I'd like to try this on my own for the experience and saving money. Bad economy = less hours at work anyway.

Double check your battery connectors and the starter wiring. Get yourself a cheap voltmeter and next time you have the problem check your battery voltage. Doesn't sound like a problem with the starter.

Have you checked the key switch and the neutral safety switch for power ? Its possible jumping the battery was just a coincidence.
There is also a possibility the starter is not good even tho you have replaced it.

Engine won't start immediately, needs multiple key turns

I would take off your starter and take it to Autozone or somewhere else that will check it for free. It sounds like you may have a solenoid gone bad. If you dont want to that just goto a Junkyard and get you a starter and swap them and be done with it. Good luck to you,

SIncerely,

it sounds like either your having a short at the starter or the ignition switch is bad, I am leaning towards the issue being the starter, usually when the ignition switch is going bad there will be no click,
