Which battery cable is positive for a 1999 ford escort? The one closest to the windshield or the other one?

    I know but the cable wires are both black and I can't remember which cable went where. Is the one closest to the windshield the positive cable?

The red is positive and black is negative .....on all cars

  3. Remove the coolant tank reservoir.
  4. Disconnect the two electrical connectors.

Hi, the negative one will connect directly to the engine block. The positive one will connect either to the starter or to the relay box by the battery.

Removal
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Rotate the temperature control switch to the COOL position.

  1. Disconnect the A/C temperature cable (19988) from the heater core housing.
    1. Unlock the heater temperature cable by pulling down the tab.
    1. Disconnect the heater temperature cable while holding the tab down.

  1. Disconnect the vacuum harness from the function selector switch.

if you probe wire with 12volt test light clip on light to bodyprob wires when light goes on that wire is positive if no light comes on turn car key to on

This is a hard question to answer. The reason why is if the battery has been replaced they could have put it in with the terminals reversed. The easiest way for you to find witch one is closest to the firewall is to look on the battery. On the battery the terminals are stamped with a + and a - sign. The + sing is the positive and the - is negative post.
