BMW 320i coupe 1994,rear wheel smoke(handbrake pads stuck on???)

Hi yesterday bought a bmw coupe for my gf,on the way back home felt a smell of burning rubber.when stoped saw a smoke coming out of the rear wheel.when i phoned the guy i bought car from,he told that its a handbrake stuck on because the car was standing and not used for a while and they ( handbrake pads possibly) needs just knocking off a bit.So my question is it really the issue or the problem is something else?Thank you

    Thanks for an advice,and I definetly going to garage tomorrow to sort this out.The guy who sold the car said it was serviced and just had an MOT,though i guess it had none of this( the guy has firm he sells cars),they would notice handbrake pads stuck.

    By the way im from UK too:) we bought it yesterday and drove from coventry to warwick bout 15 miles and noticed that 1 mile from home and that ruined the day knowing the car we just bought will need probably fixing.

    And how much you think the safety check/report will cost???

    HI again,no worries mate.noticed that people from USA visit this website more often.Phoned RAC and AA,gave me a quote for around 120 for basic check and 190 for comprehensive one.Think its a bit expensive,gonna try to find something cheaper cause the car overall cost bout 4 times more thn check:).Thanks for advice and help again gonna keep you updated.

    Everything is sorted now,gonna be difficult to explain.The problem was in metalic pipe which like he(mechanic) explained connected to brakes.that pipe was wrongly made not under any safety rules,so the brake fluid couldnt reach brakes so they got jammed.Hope you got an idea of what was the problem.And also thanks for your help.
    P.S think discovered one more problem:)))one of the rubber pipes (15mm wide i guess)which is connected at the front right side of engine block has a crack:))) and a small steam is coming of it time at a time,its when the engine was warm (just came from the garage).bought some pipe repair tape.gonna try to fix it.and hopefully gonna reach london on saturday when its gonna be checked by one of the mechanics i know.     Hi again,the hose was too short so had to use fixing tape(that hose goes deep inside so dont think i ll be able to fix),hope it will help and we gonna have a smooth trip to london,oh and yeah gonna get some red x too.

    Update:went for a 5 mile trip to check if the hose i fixed ok.hose is ok,alloy wheels front ones quite warm,back ones cold.Opened bonnet engine is hot,(coolant level ok,temperature gauge reached middle in bout 5 mins didnt went more then middle though).Is it all the way it should be???Because i think i ve got BMWphobia:)I start see and hear things,every sound i hear either engine sound or wheel or dont know I start thinking that something is wrong again.Sorry for bothering You again.

    and near that hose there is a tiny kinda nozzle dont know how to describe it ,and some kinda orange yellow stuff is coming out of it.Thousands problems in one week.Think you're fed up with me asking all those questions.Sorry for bothering you AGAIN;)

Hi from the uk considering what you say in your post and this is a present for your g/f may i suggest for her safety that you have a qualified mechanic take a look at the cars brakes and steering/suspension components and give you an unbiased written report on the above for peace of mind also to ensure it is safe for g/f to drive considering age of car and how long it has been stood/off road ??? last time serviced etc ? there are many things to consider if vehicles are layed up for long periods such as deteriation of belts brakes and steering parts seizure as the answer you were given as to why rear brake/s were stuck ??on seems he knew this?? and maybe other problems which will be discovered if you have safety inspection/report ? and will be worth it knowing g/f is safe on highways (posing ? ) hope this helps and at the end of the day car is a good buy best wishes from uk

    hiya thanks for reply ! sorry about thinking you were other than here in uk ? as many probs /advice i have answered have been from usa/dom rep/spain/and even ussr on this fixya board however please do'nt be disheartened at buying this motor i'm sure it is a good looking posermotor ? as for service/mot need i say more? it would not pass with h/brake as it is when i mentioned have a qualified mech to check car and give unbiased opinion/report more attention to brakes? /steering ? this is the most important ! for safety for you both ? if chassis/body is ok then think positive ?? it has m o t ? for1 year and plenty of time to carry out any mech work that may be needed once you ensure brakes /steering are right ? the h/brake may well be just cable seizure/rusty linkage at caliper etc in which case not a big problem WD40 ? i can understand why you /g/f likes this model and i have worked/serviced them in past seriously tho i do'nt think there will be too much to worry about and nothing that cannot be sorted if you were more local to me ? would be happy to check it over for you both and hopefully cheer you up? so think positive ! the impossible we can fix but miracles take a little longer ? ps do not commit any repairs to be done at garage you only want a check up ? AA/RAC do this? if you want reliable report but not sure on cost ? may be worth a call? especially if u r member ? hope check/s prove trivial but please come back with update if you req advice/info should any repaires need to be done ? wish you both good luck from here in bacup lanc's

    hi thanks for update so pleased you have problem sorted as i supposed you both are ? regarding leak fro 15mm hose ? it sounds very much like a heater hose as they are usually that size ?? would advise you cut back past where leak is and replace hose using a copper yorkshire coupling as plumbers use 15mm these are ideal for joining hoses as they have a lip on each end helps provide good seal with jubilee clips rather than tape ? no doubt you could check/replace cooling system hoses in time b4 g/f drives in hopefully ???summer sun days ?? thanks again and hope you have trouble free trip to london best wishes ps b4 your trip why not pour some red x fuel system cleaner in the tank? it will clear /clean **** from valves etc on a long run and help run sweeter £3-99 from asdas for a 2 x tank fill just pour the lot in? no problem have a good trip !

    hi again as you know car has been stood for a while ? so a good run with tlc will do it some good as the fuel additive runs through if temp warms up quick and remains normal ? then thermostat is ok ? as for listening for every little noise ?? think positive !you had bad vibes over rear brake but fixed now ? as for frontbrakes modern cars brake systems these days are designed to put more effot on fronts than rears in different ways without going into detail on various systems i would say if you can push or car rolles ok with h/rake off then would not suspect at this point any serious faults also if brakes operate ok and pull up in straight line ?then as i said treat her (the car )gently on run to london keep eye on temp guage but make sure oil/water/tyres etc are topped up b4 and when you arrive at london listen to radio instead of ghost noises they will probably go as car gets its varoom? back again hope this inspires you and hope you have a good trip and weather is fine/sunny i bet you will love car more when you come back best wishes

    hi assume you've read my last post ? this liquid from a kind of nozzle ? if it is part of a hose it may be bleed vent for cooling system/heater bleed valve ? the colour ? is it similar to your antifreeze in head tank ? have you trid tighten ? is liquid like water or oily feel to it ? the other possibility is this nozzle is it screwd into anything resembling to brakes system as brake fluid is yellow colour ? any more info/pointers ?

plenty of grease and push. if it still doesnt go on then trim the rubber with a stanley blade, have had to do this a few times for it to go on

You need to replace your rear brake pad linners, you also need rear shocks and shock mounts, If you still hear that nose in the rear then you may need rear wheel bearings.

Clutch not operating

Hi the clutch slave cylinder on the gear box could be damaged dew to age and standing non operation for long period. A flush and bleed could help but the slave in most times is damaged

remove the rear brake discs and you'll find the handbrake behind it. good luck.

Rear wheels not spinning. Front wheels spin when in 4 drive.

Hi First of all check the adjustment on the rear wheel thats sticking sometimes the brake pad comes away from the metal it is fixed to this maybe the case on your vehicle, the make & year of vehicle would help further but I a sure you got something to check now. Engine running hot


The first option is to to flush the coolant and replace the thermostat, if you are unlucky and this doesn't get your problem solved then the next step is your water pump.
