I hope I can offer some help as I have a 2001 XJ-8 and had a similar problem with a dead battery. I found out that there is a positive cable hook up under the hood of the 2001 XJ-8 on the passinger side near the fender wall. At the end of the black storage box under the hood there is a black cable that is covering a positive post. Pop off the cable cover and that is where you can hook your positive cable and then hook your ground cable to a negitive stop.
They should be the same, you can also ask your dealer if there is a jump post under the hood to be sure. I took mine in after this and had the trunk tumbers fixed so I can enter the trunk with a key and not just the key fab.
