Question about 2000 Ford Taurus

99 Taurus Wont start unless gas is sprayed into the intake

This 99 Taurus was starting fine, I let the car sit for 2 months and now it wont start. This Taurus has the Duratech engine. Definitely a fuel problem because when I spray gas into the intake it will start but only runs as long as the spray lasts. I hear the fuel pump come on with the key, I have fuel in the fuel rail. I took the needle out of the fuel rail where you test the pressure and when the key is on and the fuel pump is running plenty of fuel flows out, PLENTY. There seams to be fuel pressure as well. I removed the needle and put a tire gauge on the fuel rail and the gauge went up to 31 pounds. (I know this is not a reliable pressure test but it's all I had) The car was starting as I said, only sometimes I had to feather the gas pedal while cranking and then the car would start fine. Now it will not start at all unless I spray gas directly into the intake.

The car will turn over but will not start I hear the fuel pump build up pressure but the car wont start.

  • my_68_hardch Mar 08, 2009

all of the fuses are good. I tested the fuel pressure at the rail and its at least 31 psi

  • my_68_hardch Mar 08, 2009

I used a test lite and I have juice to the injectors

  • my_68_hardch Mar 08, 2009

What should the fuel pressure be?

  • my_68_hardch Mar 08, 2009

The "Service Engine Soon" comes on withe the ignition but goes off as soon as I start to turn the car over. I see no "check Engine Light"

  • my_68_hardch Mar 08, 2009

Yes I have 12 volts to the red side of the injectors, and no blown fuses under the hood

  • my_68_hardch Mar 08, 2009

Hey emissionwiz what happened to you?

  • my_68_hardch Mar 08, 2009

The car runs when gas is sprayed directly into the intake so I have spark. It is definitely a fuel problem

  • my_68_hardch Mar 09, 2009

I have spark and the car runs as long as I spray gas into the intake, What makes you think the computer is out?

I think the computer may be defective, ford sells rebuilts for $250

the check engine light is working correctly, see if u have 12 volts to one side of the injectors, red wire I think

    yadayada May 11, 2010

31 PSI isw not enough pressure, but it should idle, does the check engine light work?

I wrote what u need to do, there is no magic fix for a problem like this, u have your work cut out for a few hours, if u don't understand modern automotive electronic control systems take it to the dealer, u have a serious problem to solve here.

verify fuel pressure at at the injector fuel rail test port, if that is ok you have no injector sinal so no fuel is being delivered to the cylinders, check all the fuses under the hood, u may have a blown injector fuse to the 12 volt side of the injectors

Check out the injectors and the coil pack to make sure you are getting spark

Sometimes if it set too long the gas went bad. You may have to drain the gas and the put fresh gas in.

99 taurus sat for 2 mounths has gas wont start

Has gas where--- in the fuel tank?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on the
fuel rail & see if you have a working
fuel pump,system & pressure,somewhere
around 40# with key on/eng off

I assume the engine turns with the starter

Is the battery any good, start there, can read 12.5 volts
& still be bad

Will it try & start if you spray the throttle body with starting
fluid or carb cleaner

If you have spark plug wires, put an old plug into one wire
& ground it on motor to check for spark

You can have spark but too weak to run motor

Make sure all fuses are in place & good

99 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0L Car will start but won't stay running unless you keep giving it gas

I had the same problem. My car sat for a few days and when i went to start it i heard an extremely loud pop (kind of like a backfire). After that it would start and sound fine, but die 2 seconds later. Thank god my bf is a mechanic he knew instantly that the pcv valve hose that connects to the intake manifold unplugged itself. He plugged it back in and it runs fine now. I didnt however get a check engine light, but i only tried to start it twice before he fixed it because i was scared it jumped time.

2000 ford tarus wont idle v6

apply a light force to the gas pedal and start the car continuing to regulate the rpms with gas pedal if you can make the car idle with the gas pedal then you will probably need a new idle air control valve

Wont start 1995 bmw 525. just stopped on me pushed out of road day later it started and ran fine for 15 min. now it wont start unless it sits for a few days and is cool outside. when it starts last few...

next time it wont start, spray some starter fluid into the air intake on the engine, if it fires then you have spark, if not.....prolly a spark issue.

Eclipse has gas but wont start up

it has gas but does it have fuel pressure? try spraying a little starting fluid into the intake at the throttle valve, if it starts u have a pressure problem and a possible defective electric fuel pump.

99 Taurus wont start unless primed. Fuel pump is working

Check/Change Fuel Filter(s), PVC Valve & Emission Hoses
and/or
Gas that sits too long won't fire easily that's why we have to add winterize to our lawn mowers!
Try filling the tank with some high grade fuel cleaner additive. This stuff is like rocket fuel (about $10).
Also add a can of dry gas as you may have a lot of water and water vapor in your system!
Get a couple more cans of starter fluid too. (I always needed at least two to get my diesel running for summer)
Keep spraying and starting (It always took me at least a full can sometimes 2)
When it starts keep the gas pedal down and rev high for a good 5-10 minutes then see if it will idle.
If it still stumbles and falls consider adding another can of fuel system cleaner and/or dry gas.
Don't drain the tank as this usually just makes it worse by letting the bottom sludge stir up.
Never let your gas tank get too low as this will foul up your fuel system and always add fuel cleaner after every oil change (a must for fuel injection and cat. converter care)

Good Luck!

1999 Chevy S10 cranks but wont start

A very common problem on the 99 S10 is a leaky fuel pressure regulator in the intake plenum. What happens is when the truck sits for a few hours or more the regulator leaks all of the fuel in the fuel injection system into the intake air plenum. This does 2 things, 1 it has no fuel pressure when starting and 2 it floods the air intake with raw fuel. Sometimes if you turn the key on wait 3 seconds then turn key off then turn key back on and just turn key to crank starter for a split second and wait 3 seconds.do this 3 times to repressurize fuel system then crank to start(you will hear fuel pump buzz each time you do this.also you may have leaky fuel injectors. Try to crank engine with the gas pedel to the floor. This will tell the computer to stop spraying fuel trhough the injectors and it will start. Joe ASE Master Tech
