Question about 1986 Ford Ranger 2WD

1986 ford ranger staled out and wont restart has fuel and spark

I was pulling out one mourning and a lady cut me off i killed the truck and it wont start it is getting fuel and spark i can start and hold key in start and give it gas and it will rev up but as soon as i let off it dies ignition switch is new. cant think of anything else

    yes the stale was a an accident i put a new solenoid on there and it still does it. its like i broke a wire cause it i can hold the key in start an it will rev up but as soon as i let off it stops running

Fuel shutoff switch most fords have them passenger side under the dash, probably was tripped by accident

    it seems to have something to do with idle. your saying to keep it started you have to keep on the gas. you must have checked for leakage , so were was it hit, on the gas tank?drivers side? is it fuel injected? something defitnitley got knocked loose. there could be alot of reasons. maf sensor problems on fords are exactly what your explaining to me, but since it was an accident who knows. if it isnt maf i would check the timing next, im assuming its a belt not a chain.

Check the EGR make sure it is not stuck open. Then Check the timing and check for dirt and grease and moister in and on the Distributor cap and on the rotor check spark gap and clean plugs with fine sandpaper.

Make sure that your truck vaccume line goes into the intake manifold where there is a vacuume spiggot at the base of the carb. You may have iadvertantly hooked it up to the wrong place.

your having a weak spark issue you will need to remove your distributor to replace the pickup or the coil is breaking down sometimes this can be the egr but be careful removing this as not to break the intake hope this helps
p.s i had one with 2.9 and cured this problem on mine pick up in dist was weak but this could be emission also have any codes? good luck

1987 ford ranger has spark but wont start


Sounds like the Fuel Pump and Possibly the Fuel Filter.

check the fusable link on the posts on the side of the fuse panel under the hood its an 8 dollar part. hope that helps
