Question about 1991 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

My 1992 Dodge Dakota with the MPI 3.9L V6 stalls and misfires when cold and hot. There are times when I am trying to accelerate onto the highway that it starts backfiring through the throttle body and then it will switch to the exhaust. I am beginning to think that it has something to do with the distributor.

150K miles, i have been looking at some web sites that are pointing toward a worn or misindexed distributor. I found a site that details how to correct the problem. And it seems there has been a service bulletin about it.

I figured it out partially. I replaced the distributor and now it only misses under a load about 3500 RPM. I'll change my coil and see if it fixes that, if not I'll replace the timing chain it needs it anyway. this one make alot of racket. And I read that same service bulletin thats what made me change the distributor. And I'm taking the advice of another bulletin and replacing the timeing chain with a double roller chain and a new tensioner. Thanks for all the help.

sounds like you may have a timing belt that's slipping. How many miles are on the vehicle?

1992 Dodge Dakota 2wd 3.9L V6 Air conditioning/Heater dosent blow? when i turn the air or the heat on i can hear the compressor kick on but it dosen't blow cold or hot? any help would be appreciated

Roger it sounds like the blower motor is not comming on. There is a resistor network located in the engine compartment on the passenger side mounted to the firewall, that controlls the blower motor. The connections may have corroted or the unit itself is bad. That was the first thing I had to relpace when I got my used 92 Dakota. There is also a 30 amp fuse in the fuse box under the dash board . If that is blown I would suspect the blower motor is seized up or just pulling too much power.

had the same thing happend
Please go and change the spark plug WIRES. They crack on the inside tube , arching and causing the car to run like **** when hot.
Trust me, no fuel pump or filter and no sensors!!

When empty how much coolent do i ad for my 3.9 liter v6 in my 1990 Dodge Dakota?

There should be a 'hot' and 'cold' marking on the plastic resevoir. With engine running hot the fluid level should be down to the hot line. If not, fill reservoir, to hot line.

1992 Dodge Dakota won't start when Hot

it sounds like it might be a crankshaft position sensor (CKP). when it doesnt start try dumping some cold water on the sensor and see if it starts. I had the same problem with my 94 intrepid. Of course there are other things that might cause this problem but it is something to start with.

1`992 dodge v6

Did you replace the fuel filter? That is the first place to look when you can't get full power on acceleration.
