Here is a picture of the torque sequence. First pic is for a 3A and 3A-C engine. Second one is for a 3E and 3E-E engine. Your federal emission sticker under the hood will tell you which one you have.

3A and 3A-C: torque in sequence in 3 steps. first to 14 Ft Lbs. Second pass to 30 Ft Lbs. and final pass to 43 Ft Lbs.

3E and 3E-E: First pass 22 Ft Lbs. Second pass to 36 Ft Lbs and final pass turn each bolt an addtional 90 degrees.

some engines have a particular torque sequence and you cant just **** them down to torque, i suggest getting a repair manual as it comes in handy for many things, and a good $23.00 investment.

Make sure all bolts are good before attempting to torque them Inspect for any broken or deformed threads. Replace any that are damaged. 10 MM HEX HEAD SOCKET BIT AND A BREAKER BAR.YOU NEED TO KNOW THE CYLINDER HEAD LOOSE SEQUENCE TO KEEP FROM HAVING CRACKED OR WARP HEAD.YOU NEED HAYNES OR CHILTON MANUAL.BECAUSE SOME EARLY 90S TOYOTA CARS YOU HAVE TO LOOSEN HEAD BOLTS IN SEQUENCE.

Hello vienotkelly: The correct Main bolt torque is 42 foot pounds. The connecting rods torque to 29 foot pounds. The torque sequence for the head bolts and the correct way to tighten the bolts are attached to this reply. Thak You for using FixYa. Roger

Head Bolts Step 1-33 Ft. Lbs. Step 2- Additional 90 Degrees
