I had simular problem on 1996 Mercury Marque. Mine was stopped up exhaust port under engine heads = remove heads, clean, replace head gaskets. Also possible that you have a problem with EGR controls, that is due to bad control or vacuum hose off. What does engine analyzer say? Mine was very confusing, listed all kinds of EGR control faults. Thanks and Good Luck, Bill
YOUR EGR VALVE IS A PRESSURE FEED BACK ELECTRONIC VALVE.IF YOU USE A HAND VACCUM PUMP AND PUMP 5 HG TO EGR VALVE THE IDLE SPEED IS NOT SUPPOSE TO DROP AND ENGINE SHOULD NOT STALL OUT,YOUR EGR VALVE PAST THE VACUUM TEST.PROBLEM COULD BE PRESSURE TRANSDUCER OR THE EGR VALVE INTAKE PORT HOLES WHERE EGR VALVE SIT IS STOPPED UP WITH CARBON.CLEAN CARBON HOLE IN THE INTAKE WHERE EGR VALVE MOUNT TO.YOU CAN USE SMALL SCREW DRIVER OR PIECE OLD CLOTHES HANGER SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
i had the same problem, i replace he valve a days ago and the check engine light back again at the next day,
then i remove the vacum line avobe the valve and i clean it for inside with solvent, then i reset the computer by disconnectin the battery for a minute and the light finally disappeared,
i hope you can solve the problem as easy as i,
Yes that is what is wrong the intake manifold is plugged with carbon restricting EGR flow you need to clean out the ports to correct the problem if you run the car to long you will burn the DPFE ( the EGR pressure sensor ) out agian
