Juddering and knocking sound on my two year old Ford S Max

I just bought a second hand Ford S Max 1.8 diesel. Forgetting to put my foot on the clutch when I started the car up, I turned the key only to be met with an alarming and persistent judder of the whole car, accompanied by a loud knocking noise. I quickly turned the ignition off and started again with my foot on the clutch and the car started perfectly normally. Can anyone explain what happened and what I should do about it ?

Sorry Josh1111, I can't tell you much more I'm afraid except the car rocked violently and noisily from side to side when I attempted to start the engine. I haven't a clue if the car has a knock sensor.

Check all braces under your car. Not just visually, put hands on each and every brace. Sounds like one might be loose or broken. Hope it's as easy a fix as mine was.

Front driver side suspension knock over bumps

See if you can bounce car and replicate the noise. If you can, you should be able to find it, and put your hand on it. Stabilizer bushing are a place to look, both at the lower a arm and on the frame. If you narrow it down to the strut, it will need to be replaced. The front trans mount also goes bad, try putting it in drive with your foot on the brake and give it some gas and see if the engine moves an excessive amount.

Your clutch is either wet with oil , or you are riding it oo much and making it hot. Push it all the way in when you are stopped. Don't hold it part way, or you will burn it out.
