The car runs well except when idling at lights or in traffic and occasionally on cruise at say 110Km/hr. During the rough idling the engine misses and coughs perhaps missing on several cylinders and nearly dies. It seems to be worse on short journeys in summer and when it gets hot in traffic. The computer shows no fault and the idle speed has been lifted to no affect. It does seem to be getting progressively worse. Can you help.

Start with the simple and replace your fuel filter and clean your throttle body, When cleaning your throttle body pay attention to your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve passage way with is located on the back side to your throttle body air intake barrel.
Just follow the instructions on the spray can of throttle body cleaner and be safe. This should address your stalling issues from a dirty IAC valve.
Thank you for suing Fixya and be safe.
Sounds like your oil pump is bad - I'd have that checked. You can adjust throttle via the screw on the throttle line (look for the intake and there should be somthing resembling a bicycle cable going to the round throttle body). Tighter = higher idle. Fix the cause as soon as possible as this can destroy your engine quickly.
spray fuel into the throttle body and see if it stays running, then if it does ,suspect your fuel pump.
here are some other possibilities, and what you should do is a scan to see what code triggered the check engine light.....iac(idle air controller),throttle position sensor, crank or cam sensor, plugged catalytic converter, defective air flow meter, bad ignition module
Sounds like car is in limp home mode which needs reseting ,which may indicate you need a new Di Rail, or throttle body. Is engine management light on all the time if so Needs reseting. Hope this helps.
idle air control valve defect or egr valve stay open clean throttle body with air intake cleaner sometime its a bit hard to start after its normal and for egr valve gently tape it hope it help you fixya our post thanks pierre
