You have to use a tool and screw them in. They don't just push back like a normal caliper.

Replacing brakes on 99 VW Passat. Please advise how to push in the brake piston so it will fit back on the rotor & brakes


The fronts compress with a C clamp. The rears have to be turned in with a caliper retraction tool. In both cases, be sure to remove the brake reservoir cap before resetting the calipers, and put it back on before touching the brake pedal. Pump the brakes to get pressure before taking your first drive.

2001 passat piston wont retract rear brakes . Iwas using a c clamp to retract it but it wont budge even though i open the bleeder valve. Will buying the tool that was talked about help to make it retract?


this could be one that twist to go back in this is most likely the case. the tool will help check the local parts store tool might be a better price.

What tools do I need to replace the rear brakes and the rear rotor


There is a cheap brake piston retractor kit they sell at Harbor Freight that helps a great deal, because you have to rotate the pistons in the rear calipers, as you push them back in. That is because the rear brakes also act as parking brakes, so can't be allowed to retract. That is all you really need in the way of tools except for the right socket/torex/allen for the caliper bolts. I don't know that exact size/shape of the bolt heads because they change.

How do I retract the caliper piston?


Note on rear-caliper piston tool:
Instead of paying $50 for the VW or similar custom tool, you can use a generic $5 import "cube" tool available at most national-chain part stores.
# One side of the cube has 4 prongs. Grind or file off 2 diagonally opposite aka kitty-corner prongs to allow the cube to fit the vw rear brake piston.
# Use with a 3/8" ratchet. It can be easier to fasten the rear caliper back onto the carrier without the rotor in place while using this tool. That way you get a little extra leverage.
# Use as follows: engage the two prongs and turn piston 180° clockwise. Remove the tool. Use a generic caliper tool or a c-clamp and push the piston in about 2mm. Keep alternating back and forth between the cube tool and the c-clamp until piston is almost all the way in. If you are strong enough, you may not even need the c-clamp - just push with the cube tool as you turn. Instead of the cube, you can even use needle-nose pliers, but then you definitely need the c-clamp.
# Even with this special tool, the rear brakes can be rather difficult, so make sure you have plenty of time. I still recommend purchasing or renting the $50 professional tool cause it is much easier to use.
# If you're totally confused by all this, just take your wheels off and look at the brakes up close. Its simpler than it sounds on paper. And get the Bentley publishers shop manual for your car. That book pays for itself after one or two jobs. If your still at lost, Auto Zone has the loner tool you'll need for $50.00 and you'll get it back after you return the tool and they can give you the step by step instructions mentioned above. Trying to fit new pads to vw touran rear axle and have pushed piston back enough to get it off but cant get it back in any further to fit it over new pads and disk, wont fully retract or cant get it to ?


Try removing the brake reservoir cap under the hood where you fill the brake fluid up. This will release some pressure also use a c-clamp if you haven't already to push the piston.

Passat 2003 tdi, brake pad change..


Proper size wrenches and a large C-clamp to push piston back into the caliper is only tools for the front, but back disk brakes require special tool to TURN the piston as it is pushed back into caliper to reset emergency brake. This tool can often be borrowed from Auto parts store or purchased from Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=40732 for about $20. Don't try to service rear disks without the tool, Calipers can be broken if not retracted properly!

Drum Removal
  1. Remove the rear wheel and the tire assembly. Refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Retract the brake shoes and loosen the brake adjuster screw.

How do i retract rear caliper piston on 2001 vw passat?


the piston needs to be screwed back in as it is being compressed. there are several aftermarket tool you can buy to do this from 10 to 200 dollars depending on how nice of a tool you want.also make sure when compressing piston that the hand brake is off all the way.

CANT GET THE PISTON TO RETRACT ON THE CALIPER


With rear brakes the caliper piston must screwed in. It usually has a parking brake mechanism that has to screw out as the pad wears down. When you install a new fat pad, the piston won't retract with normal pressure of a clamp but must be screwed back in on the parking brake screw. This can be done with a long nose pliers but tools are made just for the purpose. I hope this helps.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. If equipped, disconnect the brake pad wear sensor from the harness.
  3. Counterhold the lower sliding pin using a thin open-end wrench and remove the caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  4. Pivot the caliper upward or if necessary remove the upper caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  5. Using a brake caliper retraction tool, select the appropriate sized piston press arbor and install the tool onto the brake caliper. Following the tool manufacturer's recommendations, use the tool to rotate the caliper piston clockwise as it is pressed into the brake caliper housing, until it is fully retracted.

  1. Clean the brake caliper and all sliding surfaces. With the caliper piston pressed fully back into the caliper housing, check for leaking fluid and damaged dust boots.
  2. If equipped, install a new brake pad wear sensor in the pad if the plastic part has been worn through on the old sensor. New sensors are not required unless the wire inside the plastic part has been exposed.
  3. Lubricate the slider bolts with approved brake grease.
  4. Install the brake pads onto the bracket assembly, and then carefully lower the caliper over the caliper mount. Check and make sure that the pad springs are correctly seated.
  5. Replace all removed caliper-to-sliding pin bolts and torque to:
  6. 1990-97 Passat models: 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
  7. 1998-00 Passat models: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
  8. If equipped, connect the brake wear sensor wire to the harness. Check for a good connection as most problems with the sensor circuit are caused by faulty connections. Check that the wire is held by the loop in the dust cover and the connector is held at the clips.
  9. Install the wheels and hand tighten the lug bolts. Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires begin to contact the surface and torque the lug bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to:
  10. M12 x 1.5 lug bolts: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
  11. M14 x 1.5 lug bolts: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
