Remove the tire and tighten 2 lugnuts onto the brake rotor. remove the axle nut in center of the brake rotor and drive the axle out of the spindle. If the ball joint is original, you have to grind out the rivets on the lower control arm. Remove and replace the ball joint with the hardware included with the ball joint. Next, pry-unsnap the axle end from the transaxle with a prybay and drive-snap in the new axle shaft into the transaxle. reverse to assemle, align front end and wholla! your done. 1 hour,15 min. $115.00 to do it yourself.

Why does my 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera (4 dr, V6) make grinding noises when starting to drive? It only happens during takeoff, and sometimes while driving and accelerating hard. Just replaced cv joint...

Sounds like either the Torque convertor, going bad. Could also be the clutches in the trans. Did you replace both the inner and the outer CV joints, both side ? Also check your the outer bearing where the CY joint goes through at the wheels

no you don't, although the nut won't come all the way off you have to wedge the control arm to get it off

How do you replace cv joints?

With the car on axle stands and front wheels off. Split the ball joint and turn the steering to one side. Loosen the threads on the CV joints and mark how many threads the old ones were at. Fit new CV joint and press/lever the ball joint back on. Same for the other side. You'll need he alignment doing afterwards, even if you think you got the threads spot on.

If you don't your tires will suffer. The job sounds easy but sometimes splitting ball joints can be a pain. Good luck, set aside a full day.

When making a sharp left turn (like into a driveway or parking space) you can feel & hear a thump. Just had driver's side cv joint replaced, that didn't fix the problem.

This is usually a ball joint. Jack that side up, and just as the wheel starts to clear the pavement, does the bottom slide out a touch? If so, replace you ball joints, and the problem will go away.

A noise by the powersteering in the steering axle

Ok, there is a 98% probability the CV joint needs to be replaced. I am hesitant to diagnose the tie rod ends because they do not "move" like the CV joint and wouldn't be making that noise. Also, it gets worse when you turn which is the CV joint popping on itself. You aren't feeling anything through the steering wheel so it can't be the ball joint or pittman arm. I am certain you need to replace the CV joint. If you do not know how to do it, please have a shop look at it because the front end will probably need to be realigned as well. Hope that helps!

Lower Ball Joint

You will have to remove it and replace it with a new one. The general steps for doing that is: 1)remove the tire 2)remove the caliper and rotor 3)remove the outer tie rod from the spindle 4)remove the axle nut 5) remove the cv axle 5)remove the nut on the ball joint 6) bang ball joint out and press in a new one. Then reassembly is exactly the reverse as disassembly.

Remove the wheel. Take off the hub nut. unbolt the ball-joint. Pull the axle from the spindle. Pry the axle from the transmission.

Popping sound on diver front tire

I dont work as a car mechanic but have some limited knowledge,,,, Most of the time that you get popping noises in the front end (usually while turning) it is the CV joint,,, the boot drys and cracks and dirt, sand and grit take out the joint, so if you replaced the joint and the boot and lubed it up,,, could be the tire is not completely round(was told my rear tires were shaped like eggs by one shop) other than that, you have to limit it down to the when and wheres... like when does it happen, how fast are you going, stopping,,turning, braking,,, out of gear(in nuetral..etc) then I think the answer will be easily to tell.
