Oil pump maybe tired or bearings worn out, try more heavy grade oil, if that helps sounds like bearings, and maybe an overhaul is needed, keep oil changed reg and just drive it

Make sure the oil level is good. The hydraulic tensioners for the chain work with the engine's oil. If low it will make a rattling/knocking like noise.

I have a '99 Explorer XLT AWD that I just had the ball joints (uppers and lowers), shocks, new tires and front end alignment all replaced. I still hear a knock that sounds like the ball joints. I took it...

Nice advice from the "mechanics"! Jeez....okay, are a few things to look at:

Namely, check the tie rods...the ball joints, make sure they got greased. Sounds like you have a "joint" problem. Something is not lubed properly.

Is this noticeable in a quick/fast turn and, can you hear it in a slow turn maxing out your turning raduis?
