It takes a few seconds with the gas floored to get it going. once it is warm it starts fine. I did smell a faint gas smell a week ago. it has 50k miles on it. wondering what it is and what it should cost

I just kept driving it and the problem went away. Now it starts quicker than it ever did. I think it was the crappy electronics they put in this sunfire

Possibly a leaking fuel injector(s). When you floor the gas pedal when cranking it puts the computer into clear flood mode which shuts off the injectors.

I'm going to go out on a limb and sugest that you look for melted wires in the engine compartment. That would explain the burning plastic smell. And a bare wire grounding on your engine could cause about 100 diferent problems.

It's possible a new filter and fluid may take care of this, check your transmission fluid for color,it should be clear and ruby red with now burnt smell. If its a reddish brown and cloudy definitely time for a transmission filter/fluid service.
