Left front end has dropped on 1987 Nissan Truck

Replaced shocks but cant see any type of spring that supports the load. Is it inside the upper control arm?

Vfdf4: your truck has a torsion bar suspension. This is why you don't see any springs. Depending on the amount of drop you are talking about, there is some degree of adjustment to correct ride height. If you look under the truck closely at the lower control arms, you will notice that there are long steel rods roughly 11/4 inches in diameter which attach from the rear of the control arms and go approximately to the back end of the transmission where they have what appears to be a small arm coming off each one.
There are bolts going thorough each one with locking nuts. By drawing the bolt towards you, it will raise the vehicle.
If there is no significant difference, a few inches the adjustment can be made. HOWEVER, before doing this, check the following. Make sure all the tires are the same size or at least, the tire sizes are the same size on both sides in the rear and the same size on both sides in the front although they may differ in size between front and rear. The tires ideally should be the same brand, same tread and roughly same amount of wear. Set the tire pressures equally. Check the distance between the rear axle or control arm and the body on both sides to confirm that the problem is not sourced from the rear. The distances should be the same on both sides. It is not uncommon for a sagging front end to be diagnosed as a front end problem when it is in fact coming from the rear OR the vehicl has a load which has not been taken into account.. Once you are satisfied everything is correct, at that point you can make the adjustment. You can determine the distance from under the truck by looking at the distance of the top of the front control arm in relation to the snubbers on the frame.
NOTE: The truck must be on the ground sitting in a laden position, no load in the bed or interior. Ideally it should have the front wheels on radius plates which allow for full and unrestricted movement of the front suspension during the adjustment. If you don't have radius plates, you can use a thick piece of cardboard and wheel bearing grease spread on the under side of the cardboard which will sit on the floor. The floor must be fairly smooth or this little trick won't work. If you have to draw up more than 40% of the total distance of the adjusting bolt, the torsion bar is too far gone to use.
I have seen plenty of people **** them up further, but have not known if they have had lasting effects. The front end must be aligned. This answer has been supplied by mybunkey, a Nissan master tech from the old school. I hope I have answered your question sufficiently.

Hello Russell,

If you replacing the front struts as an assembly the springs will be equipped and ready to install.

If your purchasing the strut assembly without the coil springs you will need a spring compressor.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle a service manual for safety precautions should be consulted.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  5. Remove the upper shock nuts.
  6. Remove the stabilizer link lower nut and then separate the stabilizer link from the lower control arm to gain access to the lower shock bolt.
  7. Remove the lower shock bolt.
  8. Remove the shock.
To install:
  1. Install the upper part of the shock into the frame bracket.
  2. Install the nuts. Tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  3. Install the lower part of the shock into the lower control arm. Tighten the bolt to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
  4. Install the stabilizer link lower nut to the lower control arm.
  5. Remove the support from the lower control arm outboard end.
  6. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  7. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

Change the back shock on a 1987 Mitsubishi mighty max 2.0 5 speed truck


Basically, remove the old one and fit a new one.:) If the shocks are inside a coil spring, you ay need to use 'spring compressor'. If it's using lef springs, it's very straightforward.

Removal & Installation Independent Front Suspension – 2WD Vehicles To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper shock absorber nut, retainer and grommet
    • Lower nuts and shock absorber
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower retainer and grommet on the shock absorber stud and insert shock absorber through frame bracket hole
    • Lower nuts
      1. Torque to: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
    • Upper grommet, retainer and new nut (or existing nut with Mopar Lock N Seal or Loctiti 242) on the shock absorber stud
      1. Torque to: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
  2. Remove support from lower control arm outboard end.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
Independent Front Suspension – 4WD Vehicles To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Safely raise and support the vehicle.

How to replace front shock bsorbers


This is for the 2WD model:

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle safely using jack stands.
  2. Using an open end wrench, hold the shock absorber upper stem to prevent it from turning, then remove the upper stem retaining nut, the retainer and rubber grommet.

Common front shock absorber mounting-2WD vehicles

  1. Remove the shock absorber-to-lower control arm retaining bolts and lower the shock absorber assembly from the bottom of the control arm.
  2. Inspect and test the shock absorber; replace it, if necessary.
To install:
  1. Fully extend the shock absorber stem, then push it up through the lower control arm and spring so that the upper stem passes through the mounting hole in the upper control arm frame bracket.
  2. Install the upper shock absorber nut and tighten to 100 inch. lbs. (11 Nm) on 1994 models 145 inch lbs. (16 Nm) on 1995 models, 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm) on 1996 models, or 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm) on 1997-99 models while holding the stem with an open end wrench. Be careful not to crush the rubber bushing.
  3. Install the shock absorber-to-lower control arm retaining bolts and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) on 1994-95 models and 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm) on 1996 models, or 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) on 1997-99 models.
  4. Remove the jack stands and carefully lower the vehicle.

Spongy front end


Here is the procedure - you have to determine if it is within your skillset....

You will need spring compressors.

Cheapo ratcheting ones can be had for $25, or you can rent a pneumatic type.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel Upper shock mounting nuts. Discard the nuts. Nut and the stabilizer bar link. Discard the nut. Bolt, flag nut and the spring and shock absorber as an assembly. Discard the flag nut.
  3. Using a suitable spring compressor, compress the spring until the tension is released from the shock absorber.
  4. While holding the flats of the washer, remove the nut.
  5. Remove the shock absorber. Discard the nut, remove the washer, bushing and the upper mount.
  6. Remove the insulator.
  7. Remove the dust shield.

To install-
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2. Observe the following torques:

    Center nut: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) Lower shock bolt: 258 ft. lbs. (350 Nm). Sway bar link nut: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) Upper shock nuts: 20 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
