Question about Chevrolet Silverado

My 1988 Chevy pickup transmission shifts one time in overdrive or drive, then the second shift it goes into neutral and will not pull until the speed drop's slow enough to shift down. This problem started all at once.

Yes, I thought it might be electrical or vacuum problem. Thank you. Charles

You might want to change your transmission filter to see if that stops the problem----------whoever changes filter have them check the fluid in pan of transmission to see if its gritty if it is or smells burnt if so your clutches might be slipping .

a number of things could be the cause of this. These particular transmissions are known for stripping out the 4th gear clutch hub. However a simple electric shift solenoid may be the culprit. I reccomend taking it you a local repair shop and have it professionally diagnosed.

How many times does a transmission supposed to shift starting from drive in a 1988 dodge ram with a 318 motor

Depends if you have a regular 3 speed automatic, or a 3 speed with overdrive.
Put it in drive, it will start out in first gear, then shift into second at about 15 MPH, into third at about 30-35 MPH. With overdrive, fourth gear will kick in at about 45-55MPH.

1999 chevy lumina doesn't shift into overdrive, why?

If it won't go into overdrive a speed sensor within the transmission may not be sending the shift signal to the transmission. Check fluid levels to make sure that's not causing the problem. Also, check that the fluid is red color and clean.

Transmission probably needs to be serviced at a reputable shop if you want this problem fixed.

1988 bronco automatic transmission

3rd and 4th gear clutches are the same. The overdrive section is worn out thus resulting to this problem. have the transmission repaired with a new overdrive section.

Your transmission fluid contain water, thats why the colour of the fluid changed to pink. And of such the clutch is slipping causing the engine to reve up before shifting - Check transmission cooler.
