When the check engine light comes on, the VSC light come on along with it by default.  I don't exactly know why, it just does.  Fix the problem with the air/fuel sensor and reconnect the battery, should take care of the problem.

Po 161 and p1135

PO161 IS FOR OXYGEN SENSOR BANK2 WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE CAT (PASSENGER SIDE ) ON THE OUTPUT OF THE CAT..
P1135 AIR FUEL RATIO OXYGEN SENSOR MALFUNCTION BANK1-IS NOT NEED TO RENEW IT. CHECK WHETHER YOU HAVE THE AIR FILTER CLOGGED,OR WEAK SPARK CABLES OR WORN SPARK PLUGS,AS THESE ARE THE CULPRITS WHICH CAUSING THE AIR FUEL MIXTURE BE OUT OF RANGE AND CAUSE THE OXYGEN SENSOR TO FAIL. MY LAST OPINION CHANGE THE OXYGEN SENSOR BANK 2 ( PO161)AND RESET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT USING A SCANNER AND DRIVE IT. IF NO LIGHT COMES ON SHOULD BE THE ONLY FAULT.

2002 toyota le 29,780 Miles check light on during driving code p1135

Code p1135 is a code for an Air/Fuel sensor (oxygen sensor). Bank 1 sensor 1. IT comes up when their is a problem with air/fuel mixture in the engine. It would be anything from a blocked air cleaner, faulty or fouled spark plugs to a blocked exhaust pipe/catalytic convertor. I would get these checked out, and if they are all fine the sensor its self or sensor circuit may have failed, requireing replacement. With your low miles, hopefully this maybe covered under warranty if it is the sensor.

Error code P 1135. what part needs to be replaced?

P1135. Air/Fuel Sensor Heater Circuit Response. (Bank 1 Sensor 1).

The P1135 code on your Toyota is Air fuel ratio sensor - heater circuit malfunction. Basically the problem there will be with the air/fuel ratio sensor (on other vehicles it is refered to as an O2 oxygen sensor), or the wiring/connectors leading to it. It could also be a problem with a fuse or relay on the heater circuit. Again, not a real difficult problem to solve.

Now, to specifically answer your question. I'm not familiar with the inspections in New Jersey, however just fixing the P1135 code will not cause the check engine light to stay off because there are other unrelated codes. If the code P1135 was causing the other problems then perhaps fixing that code would fix the others, but that's not the case here. The reality is you'll need to have all the problem areas looked at (IAT sensor, MAF sensor, Air/fuel ratio sensor) and repaired in order for your engine light to stay off. Normally if there are codes stored a vehicle cannot pass inspection. I would get a second opinion from another local mechanic as what you've been told may not be 100% correct.

Good luck.

Lexus 2001 RX300 - What is it when the Trac Off, VSC & Check Engine lights are on at the same time while driving? Thanks!

I have no mechanical experience and my Lexus 2001 Off truck, vsc, and check engine lights came on while driving. After a research on the net. I paid 10.00 for a diagnosis and came up with the code P1135 A/F Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1). I went to Autozone store in San Diego and purchase the sensor, 170.00 dollars. Went to a mechanic, lift the car up, pull the sensor out under the car and put the new one. The 3 lights went off. No more faulty codes. Labor 25.00 dollars. Except for the lifting of the car, the change of the sensor is like changing a spark plug. It was no difficult task and it took 15 minutes. 7/31/2010

Check engine light is on

P1135 bank 1 sensor 1 is your air/fuel sensor upstream (between manifold and engine on the passenger side). It cost about $179 at most reputable auto parts store. You'll want to run the engine for two minutes before attempting to take off the nuts also be careful not to touch the manifold as it will be hot (use a 12mm box end wrench and or a pair of needle nose vise grips or lastly a dremel tool to grind them off). unplug the old sensor plug the new in and install. pull your positive cable off your battery for 5 minutes and then re-connect. your check engine light should be gone. allow your truck to idle for a few minutes and then take a drive. good luck!

VSC/ Check Engine Light

My 2000 Lexus GS 400 just had the VSC/VSC off light and the check engine light come on. I would have to push the accelarator peddle all the way down to get it to go. Took it to the Toyota dealer and the code pulled up as the Throttle Position Sensor was out. Purchased one and having it put in. Will update if this fixes the problem.

If you have changed the proper sensor then you may need to have the cam shaft looked at.
