First off, what kind of vehicle do you have? I assume it is one that has an electric fuel pump in the gas tank, so that is what my answer will be geared to.
On the gas tank there are several lines. The most important ones for this conversation are the ones that deliver fuel to the engine and the one that returns the excess fuel back to the tank. They are usually different in size.
The larger one delivers the fuel and the smaller one returns the excess fuel back to the tank. Either one may be the culprit in this scenero. The tank is usually connected by a high pressure flexible fuel line to a stainless fuel line resembeling a brake line. At times this flex line may develope a leak for varrious reasons. It could be something rubbing against the line, it could be the crimped connection went bad and is leaking, etc. If it is your flex line, which it probably is there is a repair kit you can purchase to fix it. I have only been able to find this repair kit at NAPA. I've tried many auto parts stores and they are the only ones that carry it. The use of it is very simple actually. You find the leak in your line, which by the way is harder than it sounds and usually involves removing the gas tank. In which case you will need a special tool to disasemble the gas line from the tank. Once the leak is located you cut the line. You then have to place the remaining flex hose in boiling hot water for at least 10 seconds, which makes it soft and insert a splice fiting into it. When the line cools, it will shrink tight on the connector. You the do the same with the hose that came with the repair kit. Then do the same with the other end and install the fitting which connects to the gas tank. You should now be in business.
BTW. I have to do this very thing tomorrow.
Good Luck! and let me know if this helps you.

How to prevent air in gas tank and gas lies of my 99 GMC sierra

there will always be air in the fuel tank unless it is full up. There is air in the tank to allow the fuel pump to suck fuel and pressurise the fuel manifold. If you are continually getting air in the lines it is because there is not enough fuel in the tank or there is a hole above the fuel level. Remove the gauge unit and fuel pump (if in tank) and check for broken lines or loose connections.

Fuel pump leak

Looks like it may be a fuel return line from the fuel manifold . It may be split or loose . Probably both . Get a new section of fuel hose and some good clips and replace it

Does petrol tank leaks when overfilled i fillled up the petrol in Murano 2012 and its started leaking. local mechanics checked the gasket found it missing he replaced it this stoped the leaking for a week...

Yep,breather is necessary.Breather line is draining it under the car, less dangerous.Do not feel it to the top.Replace the draining line,dust/water may find a way into the tank, later u'll have to deal it (fuel filter, cloged fuel lines, fuel pump malfunction, fuel gauge malfunction).Track the problem eliminate the hipoteses of a cracked tank, loosed fuel pump.Cheers.

P1441 code on2001 740il

2001 bmw 740iL with code p1441 is the leakage diagnostic pump, you will need to check the connection to the pump and also test the evap system for any leaks, you may have a leak in the system, may be a loose gas cap or a line leaking, this system is for the fuel vapors, there are lines that run from the fuel tank to engine and is filtered into a canister and theres valves and leakage pump in lines, a smoke machine would be needed along with a scan tool to check valves and get readings from can check the gas cap and look around for broken lines. good day

I need to know what p0440 means

The technical meaning of the code is Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction.

P0440 EVAP System No Flow can occur during the following conditions:
Fuel filler cap might be loose
  • Leak in the fuel tank, fuel filler neck or fuelsending unit 'O' ring.
  • PCM might have failed.
  • Purge vapor line might have clogged.
  • Purge or vent solenoid power circuit is open .
  • Fuel tank pressure sensor is damaged, disconnected or it failed.
  • Charcoal canister is filled with fuel or moisture.

Cant hold pressure in fuel rail 1993 jeep gand charokee seems to want to start but shuts right down fuel is coming out of line at good rate i replaced fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator no change yet...

i'm assuming you disconnected the fuel line and placed the line in a container to catch the fuel when observing the flow.

it might sound strange but i think there might be a leak in the tank coming from the fuel pump assembly. it's possible a tube or hose is broken on the assembly and the pump is just pumping the gas back into the tank.

there's flow because there is no pressure building up with the line disconnectedand the gas flows. when connected, pressure builds and blows out the break in the tube or hose.

How does the fuel lines come loose from the gas tank on a 1988 buick leSabre i need to replace the fuel pump

The fuel lines are located above the tank, if you lower the tank not to the ground but enough to get at you can tilt the gas tank so that you can unplug the lines and the wires. its tough. good luck

1976 gmc 350 - no fuel getting to carb, I disconected the fuel line from the carb & cranked - nothing came out but I could heaar the pump working and feel some air being blown out - yes there is fuel...

yes it is probably the pump or a problem in one of the fuel lines but i would bet more on the fuel pump or suction line into the tank. If you can take the line off going to the tank put it in a jug of gas and see if the pump will pump it to the carb or the engine will run.

P044o code popped up on my Blazer. there is a fuel smell coming from the back and everytime that i fuel up and it stops pumping it flows over from the tank underneath the truck. talked to a guy at AutoZone...

The evaporative leak detection diagnostic strategy is based on applying a vacuum to the EVAP system and monitoring the vacuum decay rate. The VCM monitors the vacuum level via the fuel tank pressure sensor input. At an appropriate time, the EVAP purge solenoid and the EVAP vent solenoid turn ON, allowing the engine vacuum to draw a small vacuum on the entire evaporative emission system. If a sufficient vacuum level cannot be achieved, a large leak or an EVAP system malfunction is indicated. The following conditions can cause this problem:
A disconnected or malfunctioning fuel tank pressure sensor.
A missing, malfunctioning, improperly installed, or loose fuel cap.
A disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked EVAP purge line.
A disconnected or damaged EVAP vent hose.
A disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked fuel tank vapor line.
A disconnected or malfunctioning EVAP purge solenoid.
A disconnected or malfunctioning EVAP vent solenoid.
An open ignition feed circuit to the EVAP vent or purge solenoid.
A damaged EVAP canister.
A leaking fuel sender assembly O-ring.
A leaking fuel tank or fuel filler neck.
Any of the above conditions can set a DTC P0440.

Your may have to drop the tank and check the vent valve, see if it's broke off at the vacuum line fitting since you mentioned that gas las leaking from the tank.
When checking the vent/purge solenoid, depends on whether you have a 2dr or a 4dr. I can't remember the exact location of the 2dr vent/purge solenoid, but on a 4dr, just drop the spare tire if you have it underneath and it'll be in the middle of the cross member directly behind the rear axle. It'll have one large vacuum line and an electrical connector.
You can also see the gas filler tube to the rear of the gas tank, check for any damages where the gas may be coming out of.
Good luck and hope this saves you some money, I believe most dealer will charge close to $400.00 to drop the gas tank and do this job.
