Re: door (tailgate) won't open...the handle extends but...
There is a lever that the handle slides into on the latch. the lever over time bends and the handle doesn't pull on it. try pulling on an angle either to the left or right. you might need a new latch as the lever is part of the latch.

Hi, will the rear tailgate not open ? Have you tried testing the fuse it should be located under the bonnet/ hood back right hand side F 31 .this window is more complex than others given that doors need to be unlocked, tailgate opening handle switch needs to function .
This worked for me on 2008 Mk5 Golf, after the rear passenger door would not open fro outside or inside.
Hold the inside door latch open and keep it extended, then with the key fob open and close the door locks (still holding the inside latch open). Keep locking and unlocking the door, then it made a kluck and it released.
If you can get the hatch unlocked and opened, you can remove the interior panel
and unplug the factory powered door lock. This will not do anything to your
security systems. The only down fall is it will only open with the key. If the
hatch doesn't work with the key either, I would say you need a new lock
assembly. I have shaved my door handles and have removed the power door lock, so
I know it will work just fine ( I depend solely on my shave door handle system
and my security system (Viper) to access my truck) - from Dakota-Durango.com Lots of info there..I agree with losing the power opening option if you have it...I am renewing a 98 Durango and its keys all the way...needed new lift struts for the rear hatch tho..(that thing is very heavy...I HAD to have help installing the new struts, I had held it up with my skull to remove the worn ones....definitely use E-Bay for parts search and full synth oil w/Lucas synth additive will make the motor happy.Hope things work out....
it sounds like the cable from the handle to the top latch is broke. you will have to take off the inside door panel to reach the latch itself at the top front corner of the door and pull the leaver part that the cable attaches to. then buy a new door handle, the cable came with the last one i got
you will need to take the door card off of the door, peel back the plastic cover thats on the door, you will need to unscrew the actual door latch should be three screws from the outside, dont pull it out completely, but just lower it a little. you will need an extension and a 10mm socket, either use an extension or a screw bit extender to undo that nut then again with the one on the left. the handle should then push out and lift up from the outside of the car, reverse the steps to get it back in.
under the carpet installed on the tailgate door, there is a hole. put a screw driver in it and manually flip the latch open, to start.
yjen take the door panel off, one screw with the interiro handle, and pull the rest off,
watch the auto release slidw side to side, you will find a broken piece here, I made an extension piece with a plastic hook and screw, works fine for over a year, lube all latch parts with wd 30 once opened.
there are little metal rods that connect to the handle of the tailgate, just like the rods that connect your door handles to the door hinges and lock mechanism. just pop off the plastic cover over the tailgate handle and check and see if the rods are still connected to the handle.
if you take off interior panel.....push out the dent with a bar....then try button if no work go back inside and you should see bars going down from handle to latch area...pull up on it and should pop the trunk
The rear window has to be completely down in order to move the tailgate! You should be happy that your window is stuck up, unlike mine which is stuck all the way down! I have to completly take apart my tailgate!! If you want to try a trick to get the rear window down, my bronco has a rear window switch right next to the headlight knob, take the 2 purple wires on that window switch, and cross them, if your motor still works and if the wires are good, that should make the window go down!!! good luck, hope that helps!
