That's only a half answer.
That is true only if it is a 4 cylinder car. If its a V6 ( 3.0L) like most are then it is not external. It is located behind the timing cover on the accessory drive side of the engine ( passenger side ) and it is driven by the timing belt. It is a VERY GOOD IDEA to replace the timing belt while your there because you have to remove it anyway to replace the pump. To remove the timing cover I believe you will hvae to remove the alternator, ac compressor, power steering pump , and smog pump then the brackets for most as well.

On the front of the engine.
Water pump is located below alternator on passengers side .
It is the part under the alternator, right front corner.
