Question about 1997 Ford F250 SuperCab

Is the solinoid actuator connected to the clutch safety switch some way? vehicle will not turn over by key but will with jump wire to solinoin ign post on solinoid. clutch is bad and i am changing all clutch components including external slave cyl. tom

Have someone attempt to start it.... have someone else smack the starter with a hammer (not hard enough to break it). if it starts... replace the starter

Sounds to me that either the clutch safty switch is bad or your started solenoid is bad.

Gs 300 ignition switch


Best guess is the Solinoid (on top of the Starter) is the cause.
There will be a Main cable from the battery bolted onto the Solinoid. Near this (a separate terminal) will be a much thinner wire. This supplies the current from the ign. Sw. to the Solinoid.
Disconnect it. Re-Connect the battery.
If this doesn't fix the problem, Repair the Starter Motor.
If this fixes the problem, turn the Ign. Sw. on and touch the wire back to the terminal.
If the problem is back, the problem is the Ign. Sw.

When i turn key off it continues to try and start and eventually runs battery down


Jeffs solution (above) is for a different problem. If the Starter Motor continues to turn with the Ign. Sw. off, yours won't be a Starter Motor problem. However, the most likely cause is either the wire to the Starter Solinoid or the Solinoid itself.

I can't see the alternator being the cause either, as suggested above.

Try this
Disconnect the thin wire from the Solinoid (this is the one that activates the Starter when you turn the key).
With the battery charged, the Starter shouldn't work. Put the wire back and try again. If the same problem is there, quickly remove the wire.
One of 2 things will happen:-
1: The Starter will stop. The cause is in the wire to the Ign. Sw. or the Ign. Sw.
2: The Starter will continue turning. Repair or replace the Solinoid.

have your fuses checked, or have your started checked, it might have burned out.

The clutch has to be in for my 85-s10 blazer to start and it wont start unless i use a screwdriver on the starter. any answers?


Your diagram is below. Since the starter jumps at the solenoid, the problem would be the ignition switch, the clutch interlock, or the wiring. Check for power at the yellow wire that goes to the switch under the clutch pedal when the key is turned to start. If you have power on the red wires to the ignition switch but no power coming out when the key is turned to start, replace the switch. If you DO have power on the yellow wire, try bypassing the interlock by pulling the connector off and connecting the terminals inside the connector with a large paperclip. If that doesn't work, the purple wire from the interlock to the starter solenoid may be broken. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Switch is on, turn key, no signal to starter, no click no contack


COMMON CAUSES OF NO-CRANK NO-START

Low battery (Check battery voltage, recharge if low, or jump start with another vehicle or battery charger).
Loose or corroded battery cables (Inspect, clean and tighten BOTH ends of BOTH battery cables).
Bad starter relay wiring connections or ground connection (Inspect, clean, tighten wiring connections).
Bad starter relay/solenoid (Check for voltage at relay, if relay has voltage but there is no "click" when key is turned to start, replace relay).
Bad starter (Jump battery voltage direct to starter to see if it spins, or remove starter and have it bench tested at auto parts store).
Damaged starter drive or teeth on flywheel (Remove starter and inspect drive gear and flywheel teeth, replace damaged parts if necessary).
Bad ignition switch (Check to see if voltage reaches starter relay/solenoid when turn to start. If not, check for open P/N switch and brake or clutch pedal switch. Replace ignition switch if defective).
Open P/N safety switch, or open Brake Pedal Safety Switch (automatic transmission) or open Clutch Pedal Switch (manual transmission). Bypass switch with jumper wire to see if engine cranks, or use test light or voltmeter to check for voltage passing through switch when ignition is turned to start.
Engine seized due to bearing failure or internal damage (Use socket and long handle to see if engine can be turned by hand, if not engine is locked up).
Engine hydrolocked due to coolant leak from leaky head gasket (Use socket and wrench to see if engine rotates, remove spark plugs and see if coolant comes out or engine can not be cranked with plugs out).

I own a 1992 gmc jimmy and I was wondering if the clutch sensor has anything to do with starting. Sometimes when I start it, it takes a few times before it starts. Am not pushing the clutch far enough down...


Yes, there is a clutch switch which must be activated (closes switch) for the starter to engage. This is a safety item so the truck won't start in gear. With time it may begin to fail, this should be any easy fix. And yes from time to time you may not be pushing the clutch in far enough to actuate this switch.

There is a plug to go through the firewall above the passenger wheel well. You may have a bad clutch interlock switch (m/t) or neutral safety switch (a/c).

Starter wont engage


The problem is either the starter solinoid (located on fender near battery) or you are not getting power to the "s" terminal on the starter solinoid from the ignition switch. If you follow the positive battery cable from the battery you'll follow it to the solinoid. Remove the small wire from the terminal marked "s" on the solinoid and using a screwdriver jump from "s" terminal (not the wire) to where positive battery cable connects to solinoid. (with battery connected). If starter doesn't do anything the solinoid is bad. If starter cranks then you are not getting voltage from ignition switch through "s" terminal wire.

Ingnition switch or actuator


On the 92 S-10 it sounds like the actuator rod that is connected to the ign switch on the bottom of the column could be possibly bent or the rack and pinion could be broken inside the column. The ign switch my be out of adjustment. You can try to adjust the ign switch on the bottom of the column yourself. If that does not work,my suggestion is if you are a novice is to take your vehicle to a mechanic to get the steering column fixed.

On the 91 blazer there are 2 fusible links that the battery cable connects to on the starter. Jack the vehicle up & use jack stands under the vehicle. With a test light check to see if there is power to the starter solenoid where the battery cable is hooked to. If there is power find the 2 wires that are on the same post that the battery cable is hooked to on the starter solenoid, they will have a white piece of round plastic (about a inch long) with a wire going into and out of it. This is the fusible link. Probe the wire before and after the round plastic. If there is power on one side and not the other side,you will need to replace the fusible link. You can use a inline fuse holder with a 25 to 30 amp fuse to replace the the fusible link.The fusible links supply power to the vehicle inside for the lights, radio, wipers,ign switch, etc.
