The spark plug tube seal has gone bad. They come with a new valve cover gasket. Replace all of the seals and the gasket and your problem will be solved.

This caused by the valve cover gasket leaking, it is a common problem on this car, replace the valve cover gasket to correct the problem, the part is about $15 and takes about 1 hour to install.

My 2002 dodge neon has check engine light with coded p0302. I know to try replacing the plug/wires, are there any other common causes for this error code that I should check out?

Hi! When replacing the plugs and wires on this model be sure there is no oil in spark plug wells. You will notice the oil on the plug wire boot when removing it. If there is any oil on any of the boots the valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals will need to be replaced or the misfire code you mentioned will return. Hope this information helps!

Spark Plugs

The oil on the spark plug usually comes from the valve cover seal or the spark plug tube. The valve cover seals to the tube and the tube seals to the head. The tube is usually a tight fit in to the head with a little sealant. The tubes can be purchased at the chrysler dealer or possibly at a local parts store. As for the red fluid,it is automatic transmission fliud . It is used in the manual transmission as well as the power steering system. You could have an axle seal leak, transmission shifter seal leak, power steering seal leak, depending on which side of the vehicle is wet.

not really the valve cover needs replaced get a valve cover gasket kit it will come with the gaskets that cover the spark plugs .if you let it go after a while it will contaminate or spark plugs wires and cause a misfire or your car will start missing.please rate this answer thanks.

Oil leak

That is an overhead valve engine and there are seals around the tubes that surround the spark plugs and they tend to dry out and leak after awhile.

Recommend getting a valve cover gasket kit and replace the valve cover and Spark plug tube gromments
