Can't turn the idle down

I have a 1987 fuel injected honda prelude. it idles too high and i can't figure out why. I have had the vacuum hoses checked for leaks and proper routing, all seems fine, the idle screw is turned all the way down and the car still idles around 1500 when its cold and 1250 warm. the car runs fine, but i need it to pass emissions and to do that i need the idle within spec so i can also fix the timing. please help

Did you check the pcv valve for sticking? there is an idle control solenoid also, lemme know how it goes

You have 2 idle settings. one is for cold and one is for after the engine has warmed up. So find the scew that goes to the warm engine idle. turn it down and your set. You might need a Chilton to find what you are looking for.

Hi Lasbs, Check the ignition timing and adjust with a stroboscopic timing light. The correct timing should be 10 degrees BTDC. If the vehicle is fitted with a carburetor, I believe it needs adjusting correctly, or with the Honda carb, it may be easier to replace it. If the vehicle is fuel injection carry out a diagnostic scan. Also make sure that all vacuum tubes are fitted tightly and that there are no cracks or broken joints. Regards John

this sometimes occurs with age due to egr and intake becoming carbon filled , inturn requireing more vacuum inturn raising rpm to keep up , check all vac lines for poss leaks this will cause prob , to check for leaks crank engine let idle use can of wd40 or starting fluid and spray lightly around suspected area , if rpms raise when u spray then u have found ur leak

This issue can be many, many things, Carb, or fuel injection? Typically, there is an intake leak somewhere, hoses fall off or crack...

Isn't it fuel injected? More likely:
Pull plug wires one at a time, the one that has no effect isn't firing. Bad plug or wire.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. There may be a stop adjustment on the throttle body, but usually high idles are due to unmetered air entering the system.

vacuum very important on this car number hoses & replace one by one. see how it runs. if problem continues check emission sticker & make sure the hoses r conected to the proper tubes.

1990 Honda Prelude 2.0 si F.I. Idle Fluctuation


This problem is a little bit hard to coz you need to check the following throttle body, fast idle valve & the IACV valve. First the throttle body it must fully closed during idle and the TP sensor voltage must be 0.5 volt. The fast idle valve is wax type there is a 2 small hose pass below of this valve, if the coolant water is not circulating the valve will not closed. You can check it by touching the lower portion of this valve after 1 min. Regarding the IACV you can check if this is the fault by removing the hose connecting the throttle body and air filter. there is 2 small hole near the opening of the throttle body, while the engine is running at idle close one by one and see which one cause this problem.I hope this will give help to your problem.
