Question about 2000 Volvo S40

No accelration on the highway

So I had my mechanic do some work on my 2000 s40 turbo volvo recently. He cleaned the throttle control and changed the fuel filter. But now when I am driving on the highway and I punch the gas to accelerate it stutters...and doesnt go AT all..

Any clue...

The turbo is not working


I had my Volvo at the mechanic recently and he mentioned that the connection to the turbo had fallen off. He said it was quite common, there is a small pin that holds the connection in place and the pin gets rusty and breaks. He didn't even charge for it, said the fix only took a few minutes. Can i replace a volvo s40 turbo engine with a regular non turbo volvo s40 engine. my mechanic says he can install the turbo from the toasted turbo engine on the non turbo engine but that he will have to...

The overdrive quit working in my 2000 volvo s40. All other gears work right and shift smoothly. When driving on the highway, if i let off the gas to coast, it seems to kick into overdrive, but any...


Several suggestions, some cheap, others not. The overdrive relay is the first suspect. It's located on the relay rack behind the fuse panel (usually). Cheap fix. About $10 on Ebay. Just be sure the part numbers match. I always carry a spare. The speed sensor might be another source of problems. It measures RPMs and feeds the info to the computer. Not an easy do-it-yourself fix. Also, the transmission control module. An easy swap with a spare from Ebay. It hides under the dashboard, passenger side. A solenoid on the transmission locks the OD in and out. Not an easy do-it-yourself fix. Volvos are notorious for flaky issues like this, so I would try all the simple fixes before bringing it to your mechanic.

2001 Volvo s40 oil leaking in turbo, smokes white smoke and turbo not kicking in. I have a new head, timing belt waterpump, oxygen sens. valve job, cam pulley all changed. It is still smoking and no turbo....


Water in combustion chamber makes white smoke--suspect that the head gasket is leaking water into the chamber. If oil leaking around turbo, it may have a bad bearing and bad oil seal. Check waste gate valve and control.

Are you consider yourself a handy person?

Swap the coil and see is the misfire going to follow to another bank of cylinder.

You has total of 3 coil in your engine.

Do a detail record map and switch the two coils.

A replacement aftermarket coil is oil $46 w/one year warranty and $55 will get you a life time warrent coil.

Do the swap and see what happen.

A leaky/failing injector can also cause the same problem.


Do a Chevron Techron fuel injector clean ran and highway ran.

Oil in the turbo, smoking bad!


check to make sure the turbo oil return pipe is not clogged. if it is pressure will build up causing oil leak through seal causing it to smoke.

I would have the throttle plate cleaned because when they get dirty they have the symptoms that you are describing
