Question about 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

1 Answer

The power lock (driver's side sliding door) on our 2003 Chrysler Town & Country Van will not work. We have to manually lock and unlock the door. How can this be fixed?

I have the exact same problem

  • gmgirten Mar 09, 2009

Clarification - The doors are not automatic open. This one lock doesn't respond with any sound at all.

  • gmgirten Mar 09, 2009

I went out to look for the contacts but they are not there. I've seen those before on other vans, but they were newer than the 2003 we have. I also was mistaken on the click sound. It appears that it is still trying to lock/unlock but is not engaging.

Take a look at end of door where latch is & post where the 2 meet when closed. Look for round metal button/contacts, about 1/2" in diameter. If you look close, they should line up to make contact with each other when door is closed. Take some fine steel wool (preferred) or fine sandpaper and scuff them up until you see metal is clean on both surfaces. Now try it, and let me know what happens.

O.k. so that tells us there's power getting to it, which means it is probably seized somewhere in the linkages that attach to the latch, preventing it from tripping the locks. Take a can of WD-40 or similar & start spraying with little red nozzle, inside the latch and all around it, on as many angles as you can to get those linkages unsiezed. Stick red nozzle of spray can in key hole also, as far as you can and spray as you pull it out slowly. I've had to resort to removing the door panel and getting right at them from time to time, but have had luck with this if patient. Let it sit and penetrate for a few minutes then start locking & unlocking it, manually from inside if necessary to try and get things moving, and occasionally trying the power lock. It may take 2 or 3 soakings, but witha little luck, it will finally loosen up enough to start moving again. Once it starts, give it a couple of days to be sure, then spray same way, but use "white lithium grease" this time, to keep the linkages lubed up to help prevent it from seizing again. If worst comes to worst, you'll have to pull panel off & get them moving and loosened up by hand, with same method only directly spraying on the moving parts.

Sounds like the actuator has frozen up (electric solenoid that moves lock mechanism) You can remove the door panel and spray wd40 into it through the small rubber boot where the linkage enters the solenoid and try to work it up and down, but generally if it's very frozen, it will need to be replaced.

My 2001 Chrysler Town & Country passenger sliding door won't open

your door panel can come off and you can access internal door locking mechanism from inside car first inspect to see all rods are hooked into plastic sleeves then make sure lock is disengaged by pulling rod towards rear of van it should then be able to be opened easily if not your locking mechanism is frozen inside of door between a pillar and door it will have to be pushed to open from inside of door panel once you do that door will open if you cant make lock work manually once this is done replace locking mechanism or rods accordingly.

2000 town and country van back door will not unlock

sounds like the lock is seized, you will have to remove the panel,it's held on with screws and snap plugs, remove all the screws and then gently pull the panel off. you will be able to open the hatch by sliding the lever sideways. the latch and mechanical lock are the same unit. it has a electrical actuator. your dealer or regular tech sould be of great help in this very simple matter.
