1997 Toyota Estima- engine won't start

I have a 1997 Toyota Estima. In the mornings, I have difficulty strating the car. I am able to turn the ignition switch but it only clicks and nothing happens. I have to push the gear up slightly (eventhough it is is in 'P') and then when I start the ignition, the engine starts up. It drives well after that but when the engine has been turned off and left to cool, I face the same problem. I took it to the garage and they said it could be the switch gear or gear switch?. I am experiencing this problem more as the days goes by. Sometimes I have to turn the ignition switch 10-15 times before the engine starts. Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

Replace the Battery cables,,or at least clean and replace them,,make sure you are getting a really good ground from the battery to the motor and frame.
Also,,make sure the positive lead from the battery is making a good connection with the starter or the starter solenoid.

There is either a cable not getting a very good connection, solenoid has problems, or there is a wiring leading to a relay that has a bad connections. How is your ignition? Is it loose or have loose wires?

also check the magnetic switch mounted on the starter housing, is supplied by current from the starting switch circuit of the ignition switch. This magnetic action of the switch mechanically engages the starter clutch assembly and electrically closes the heavy switch which connects it to the battery. The starting switch circuit consists of the starting switch contained within the ignition switch, a transmission neutral safety switch or clutch pedal switch, and the wiring necessary to connect these in series with the starter solenoid or relay.

SOURCE: 1999 Toyota Solara Starter or Ignition Switch problem?

Your problem is a faulty starter solenoid relay.
It is staying in the POWER ON position.
The relay is located under the hood near the power distribution panel (fusebox) i believe.
Consult your owners manual or Repair manual for exact location.

SOURCE: 1999 Toyota Solara Starter or Ignition Switch problem?

1. You may have already done this, but call your dealer or get on-line and find out if there has been a recall on this particular item.
2. Has the starter or solinoid been replaced or worked on in the past?
3. Has any other procedure related to your starting system been performed?
4. As you have surmised, the ignition switch could have shorted, effectively "welding itself" to the positive terminal of the switch; or, similarly, the solenoid either mechancally or electrically, is hanging up and creating the same scenario.

This is potentially a dangerous situation, as it can cause an automobile to catch fire and burn itself to the ground.

Do not trust this situation If it has apparently corrected itself. A automobiles' starting system is a high voltage/amperage circuit. So much so,You can weld with it.

Do not trust this situation unless you are certain you have found the problem.

No. engine mounts, electrics, ecu, axels and a whole lot of other stuff would need to be changed and cut and welded.even after that you could have a host of other difficulties. not an easy task for even the experienced engineer.

Toyota lucida estima td wont start on could mornings

It may be the starter motor contacts which are worn. I have done this twice (on 2 different estima's myself. The starter will not turn or not properly. New contacts for these Denso starters are available on ebay from nipponnev for about £10 delivered and take about 1 hour to fit. No need to buy another starter. Hope this helps. Regards, Paul

Gear lever stuck on '96 Toyota Lucida Estima

Automati Estimas have a safety device that locks the gear lever in 'park' until the brake pedal is pressed. Turn on the ignition and check that the brake lights are working, as the lock works on the same circuit. There may be a problem with the wiring to the lock mechanism
