Question about 1996 Saab 900

1996 Saab 900 S Convertable Will not open/close

I was opening the convertiable top when about half way thru the process the SID display beeped and said to check the trunk lid or close the trunk lid, this stopped the process of dropping the top. I checked the trunk and found it both locked and secured so I flipped the lever again to start the process and it again told me to check the trunk lid, this time I got out and opened and then shut the trunk lid to make sure that it was closed which it was and I then tried it again, and again I recieved the same message. Eventually I had to manually close the top so that I could drive the car home. I was wondering if anybody eles had had this problem, and if so could you tell me how to fix it i.e... is there a trunk lid sensor or button that I need or could check to see if it is not matching up correctly. I need to get this fixed because when you close the top manually you can not secure the back window down all the way because the rear latches are controled electroniclly so I have a inch gap between the rear window and the touneau and the SID keeps beeping and telling me to check my latches every fifteen seconds or so. Any information that you can give would be welcomed, I really do not want to take it to the local SAAB dealership here in Perrysburg, they take forever to attempt to fix any problems and they always overcharge for their **** poor service.

Same problem, but with a 1997 Saab 900.  It has been sitting for a few months now in the garage as I rarely drive it in winter.  If anyone has an idea what to do, please let me know!

mine is the same, but I have a crank noise that seems to not stop.
I haven't had the chance to take it to the dealer to check yet. I heard that they charge even just to check the problem. And yes, it always steep for Saab service.

There are a few reasons that this might be happening but first i would check the compartment where the top is store when down. There are sensors that tell the car if the compartment is ready for use and if the compartment is being obstrcuted you would get that code. email me at if this does not work I may be abloe to help you futher.

Here the fix the saab convertable has the famous failed ground wire of the convertable top, the line the ground in the converatable itself and yes it fails, here is what you do behind the driver side is the convertable module you must identify the ground (I think it brown but very not sure), ground the convertable control ground wire and you will be functioning in no time dont bother to repair the ground in the top just the control top module and attach it to a good ground where it is mounted

1999, 93 convertible top starts to open or close sid beeps.

sounds like somethings preventing it from closing properly. Check it well worst case you need a new convertable module. Cost money but better then buying a new top

Saab roof starts to open but the lid dose not fully open to let the roof fold down

The 94-98 Saab 900 cars have numerous top issues that are known. The primary issue is the design of the convertible top Tonneau motor that is located in the right rear quarter panel behind the light. The problem with the original motors was that there was not enough strength in the housing that held the motor to support the top movement because the teeth on the gear drive would get chewed up when the motor moved out of position. The failure of the Tonneau motor causes the top to chatter about half way up or down because the teeth of the motor gears would get chipped off. Replacement of the gears or replacement of the motor is the only repair and the convertible top Control module must be programmed after the repair by someone with a Saab Tech 2 computer tool which is used to program the top potentiometer settings. If you catch this problem early enough it can be repaired by using the bracket reinforcement kit.
Check latches is also a common failure which displays on the Saab Information Display (SID) Generally, this failure is due to problems with the micro-switch located in the latches that secure the convertible top when up.
Another issue with the convertible tops has been the control module that controls the top electronically. The major problem with this is device is that it looses the ability to communicate with the Saab tech 2 tools. This problem appears to have been solved in the newest versions of the ECM.
This TSB covers the known issues with NG 900 vert tops. There are numerous others for the 9-3 tops.
