Question about 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

1 Answer

First off, when transmission is cold it doesn't seem to want to shift properly. Secondly, at all times I have to manually shift the tranny to even get the car going. The car shifts fine until you reach overdrive and then no matter what speed I travel at the tranny will not shift into overdrive. Please help this is driving me crazy. Thanks

Check the fluid level in the transmission. To do this, from under the car remove the fill hole on the one side. Transmission oil should just trickle out the fill hole when properly filled.

If it's low or you're uncertain what's in there and want to make sure the correct fluid is present, you'll need a bottle pump. Mazda calls for 75w90 GL4 and 2 quarts are need for a complete fluid change. Not a bad idea if you don't know when it was last done.

Here is your clue the ABS light and a erratic Tach, that is the speed sensor problem just to let you know they are known problems with the Sebring There is a (TSB) technical service bulletin, about speed sensor delay engagement that you are facing with
A/T-41TA/AE 42 LE Delay Gear Engagement Your fix is to have this check out you may be looking at a flash on the software of the TCM or even the PRNDL switch on the transmission

Tuck is not shifting properley checked tranny fluids they were good ?checked visually conections to tranny eletrical? tranny seems strong but has to rev up to 32500 rpms befor it shifts? whats that all...

Chances are you have a 4l60e transmission.(or one of its relatives) Shifting is done through the engine computer and internally by shift solenoids, on command. The system needs to be scanned to make sure that proper signals are going to the solenoids and that the solenoids are working properly.
By the way....I hope your engine really isn't turning at the rpm you stated....even Indy cars can't rev that high!!!

For your sake I hoping its a shift solenoid. Yes its in the valve body and there is some transmission surgery involved but its not that pricey. Otherwise it could be the shifter , manual shift valve, 3rd gear linkages etc. This is major tranny surgery. keep me posted.

Slow shifting when engine is cold

I have the same problem with my 97.... especially shifting from 3rd to O/D... I've had the tranny serviced and flushed.... It still does it until the tranny warms up.... the tranny's in them are temperature picky!!!!! It's the nature of the beast!!! Wait until spring and everything will be good until next winter!!! If you're really concerned with it you can put a "cold front" on it or block half (NO MORE THAN HALF) of the tranny cooler with cardboard thru the winter months
