I have a 1987 jeep cherokee Laredo and it won't shift out of first gear!!

If this jeep is an automatic, there is an inline fuse under the dash by the glovebox. There is a harness there and the fuse is taped to it. Check the fuse and see if it is good. Check the condition of the fluid to.

Have you checked the trans fluid? Has to be checked with engine running in neutral. If its good you will need to bring it to a transmission shop. Good luckHowie

Rpms runnning over 2000 jeep cherokee laredo 1997


Maybe the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) if the computer thinks it is all the way to the floor then the gears would not shift until the engine RPM is real high. Also would not be able to determine the car is supposed to be idling. Do you have a check engine light? If you do this may come up on a scanner.

I would check the transmission fluid level and color, should be a nice clear red color. You may need to have the filter replaced. Possibly some internal transmission problem also.

Shifting lever doesnt lock


Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

Just pull up on the 4 wheel drive lever .. You can shift on the fly to part time and full time but you gotta stop and in park or neutral you can shift into 4 wheel lo .. I have one myself .. love those jeeps .. you "understand"
