Have the vehicle scanned. If you have a code for Maximum Adapt/Long shift, replace the EPC pressure control solenoid. This is a real common failure on the 4t65e transmission.

shift solenoid is internal to the trans and could be your concern depending one which solenoid is the concern

more often than not though you would hear the engine rpm's higher and the vehicle not moving

I's start with a trans flush and see if the concern repeats

if so then you need more diagnoses like what is fuel pressure at the time of the concern, MAF in grams/second and TP data

My saturn was running fine. Then it would shift very hard

well if it shifts very hard into every gear that means the pressure control solenoid in the trans went bad and it causing the trans to go to max line pressure thats why it shifts so hard,,,it does that so you can still drive it even thou it broken, anyhow the PC solenoid is under the trans pan which is on the TOP of the trans under the battery,,,,not too hard a job to do, the parts are about $100 labor might be about $200,,,easy fix,,could be alot more,,,and if you dont fix it ,it will break other stuff in the trans and cost alot more,,,

Did you change the transmission filter and gasket as well as the transmission oil before running your truck.

There are a set of pressure switches located on the valve body inside the trans pan,you could have them cleaned replace the filter, and then have the trans flushed. If this doesn't help you will have to have then trans checked for a pressure problem or leaking seals

It has nothing to do with the transmission, it's your engine mount thats bad.

1999 Saturn SL2 shifting problems

I also have a 1999 sl2 saturn . I was having about the same problem but mine also did not want to go into reverse somtimes as well . Ichanged my fluid and filter and put in a good trans conditioner and just about all my trouble went away. The trans filter is just like a oil filter it just screws on the outside of the transmission . It is located down under the air filter housing, and the fluid plug is right on the bottom of the trans.

At low speeds the transmission shifts into 2nd with a 'thud'

Likely you have taken a lot of miles off the unit's life. You can try a container of lucas trans conditioner in there...likely there is a lot of varnish holding internal valves from moving (actually surprised it works at all!!)

Not shfiting right

eric sounds like you have a electronic trans mission or computer controled the check engine light on ?

second it sounds like your trans is in limp in mode ( only has second gear).

the hard shifts is not good news.

somtimes when the controller sets a code that forces limp in it has to be cleared.

dis-connect the battery for a few min. then try it again see if it shifts but be easy on it and make sure fluid level is good.

if it it still messes up CHA CHING hehe i'll fix it fer 1000 bucks
