Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

The headlights will not go on

I have a 96 Jeep Cherokee. When I turn on the headlights, the headlights do not go on. Instead the highbeam indicator light and the two directional indicator lights (solid light, not blinking) on the dashboard go on. Any ideas what is causing this?
Thank you

The turn signals work fine when the headlights are not on; the switch feels ok.

    Thank you

I checked the directionals again and they do not work with the headlights off. The directional indicator lights and highbeam indicator blink on and off quickly; the rear directional taillights blink but there is nothing in the front. I also checked the emergency flasher with the headlights and directionals off; the dashboard indicators flash as normal and the rear lights flash; no lights in the front go on.

I checked the ground wire off the negative terminal of the battery and it is securely bolted to the body of the vehicle.

Thanks to all for thoughts on this.

if the lights work good with the headlamps off and not on i would be looking at the switch you and getting a back feed from something to the turn signals that is why they only light up the dash and not flash.

sounds like you have either a bad dimmer switch or a bad headlight switch. does the turn signal switch feel loose and does it work right?

What you have is a ground problem. Check the body ground off the battery. There might be a small wire coming off the negative battery terminal, that is also a body ground.

I show the dimmer switch for the headlights being part of the turn signal switch in the column.

Lowbeams do not turn on. Highbeams work.

Replace both low beam headlights. It's common to have one headlight burned out and you may not realize it for months. Then the other one goes out and "puff" you have NO low beams.

Headlight wont turn offcole family racing

Only 2 things can cause this either the headlight switch or the headlight relay, chances are it's the switch,if you have a multimeter pull the relay out and probe the leads with the headlights in the off position you should only have power on 1 wire, with them on 2 wires are hot if this is the case then the relay is stuck,it's in the fuse box under the hood, another thing can cause this if the fog lights have been rewired to stay on even with highbeams on,power will feed back to the headlight circuit.

96 jeep cherokee headlights

The headlights are on a relay and maybe its getting weak. I would have it checked and replaced because it could go out and stay out.
God Bless Greg
Oh yeah most of the time it is built into the head light switch.
