Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

96' grand am 6 cyl. 2 door. turns off right after started.

96' grand am 6 cylinder 2 door turns off right after starting it up. Sometimes it runs perfect and sometimes it wont start up and stay running. Within 1 second of starting it, it turns off. So I believe it is turning over and starting just for a brief moment then off...
Also, all of the warning lights turn on randomly while driving and will turn off if you hit the dashboard, but then turn back on when you hit a pot hole... The car runs perfectly other than these two things. My pregnant wife is scared to use the car in case she gets stuck somewhere by herself and it wont start.
My mechanic who doesn't do electrical says maybe a module needs to be replaced which can cost about $700.00.

(1)look at the wires in the steering column where it adjust up and down and see if some wires are touching inside the steering cover.
(2) it a reason to suspect a bad ground to the motor also will cause it too

your mechanic is wrong!!!!cause i have never held of or come across a module doing such things.

How to fix code P0306 cylinder 6 misfire?

Swap spark plug with cylinder 4. Swap COP (coil over plug) with cylinder 2.
If problem moves to cyl 4, bad spark plug.
If problem moves to cyl 2, bad COP.
If problem remains in cyl 6, suspect valve or piston problem.
Start with compression check

Will not start, code shows misfire on cyl 6 have

The coil pack is most likely the problem for the miss fire on the cylinder, but the engine most of the time will still run, just poorly.Crank shaft sensor would be the next thing to check,if there is fuel pressure present at the fuel rail. Also enough fuel pressure.

96' Pontiac Grand AM, Won't start, has fuel, no spark.

We have a 1996 Grand am SE 6 cyl with similar problem. If yours is a 6 cyl check your crank sensors. There are 2 of them, one behind the Vibration damper and one on the back of the block that has a yellow / purple wire to the Ignition Control Module. Haynes manual electrical diagram call this one an Ignition Timing Sensor, but it is a Crank Sensor at the parts stores. I would check this one first. You should also check your coils and Ignition Switch and Knock Sensor. You can get a Haynes repair manual from Advanced auto that will explain how to test these items. Good Luck.

Runs rough, misses, sometimes then clears up.

You have a cylinder misfire. You need to check the distributor, wires, and pull the plugs because something is not firing the fuel mixture in one or more of your cylinders at timew. you can do the plugs yourself for the most part. I dont know how the 6 cyl looks in the engine compartment of the wrangler, but from my experience with a 96 XJ, number 6 cylinder is very difficult to get to because of the interior air intake vents. if all the plugs seem fine, you may want to take it into a shop for a distrubutor and wire check

Runs bad

I don't think 2 coils will go bad at the same time.
Is this a 6 or 8 cyl?
Could be a vacuum line that's common to both cylinders.
