1991 Nissan Pickup Fail Emission for Hydrocarbons

Can someone please provide a recommendation for passing the emission test. The only part that failed was Hydrocarbons. I was told a turne up would fix the problem. However, the truck's pickup is very poor and it shakes around 60 mph and smooths out around 65 mph. I would like to do this as inexpensive as possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, DNB451

that usually means that someone either disconnected the battery or the computer was reset. You need to drive the vehicle for about at least 20 minutes at road speed so the computer can scan all modules.

Failed emissions hc high

First I recommend changing spark plugs, air filter, and change the oil & filter. If these are dirty or fouled up it will kill your millage and help to fail smog.
You can reduce both NOX and CO emmissions by adding denatured alcohol to the gas tank. Run it down to a bit under 1/4 tank and add 1 1/2 gallons. It makes the engine run a bit rough, but really clean.
If you still fgail SMOG then you need a new catalytic converter.
I used to "trick" my 86' with alcohol, but just rebuilt the engine so I put a new Cat on it. It passed emissions with WELL BELLOW numbers.

Good luck.

Fail smog test

fist i would like you to post the year make and model of the truck along with the HC ppms and NOX ppm it would be very helpful but high hc and nox can be attributed to a faulty EGR system nox is produced when the combustion chamber temperature gets too high so a small amount of exhaust is cycled back into the air stream to help cool them there are other causes but without looking at the levels its much harder to say

I have a 02 xterra and did not pass the emission test. The code showing was knock sensor, I replace it, but still dont pass. SOS please 3300cc.

Codes do not tell you what to replace
They only tell you that a malfunction occured
Does not mean anything need replacing
Example: if you got an O2 Sensor code from a loose
vacuum hose ,would you change the sensor.
Most people would. I would diagnose and repair the hose,
letting in the extra oxy and leaning out my sensor.

What where the Emission Readings?

What did it fail for

I got a 95 corsica 2.2L failed emission test the carbon monoxide is too high the hydrocarbons passed but were higher than previous tests and the nox passed but were higher than previous tests...

sounds like a bad cat and o2 sensor. try a scanner, if the downstream sensor is attempting to make a 99% fuel trim adjustment, you can bet it needs changing along with the catalytic converter. get someone to follow you and accelerate hard, a rotton egg smell is a dead giveaway

Can't Pass Emission Testing because High Hydrocarbons and some shaking and stalling on cold engine starts.

Give it a tune up,change air and oil filter and oil.Put preimium gas in the tank. And change fuel filter.
