Question about 1992 Mercury Sable

2 Answers

My wife has a 2003 merc sable 3.0 that won't start. It acts like a low battery but it has a full charge. The starter was replaced 1.5 yr ago. The headlights don't dim when you try to engage the starter. All you get is click and occasionally a short struggle of a spin. I've checked all the connections and replaced the positive battery cable end. . What am I missing?

I know the battery isn't new but the head lights don't even dim when you try to engage the starter. I'll take the starter off tomorrow morning and have it tested at autozone

    It was the starter!

They tested it at autozone and it passed but when he went to unhook - smoke was rolling out of it. Atleast it was under warranty.

Have you tryed replacing the battery? A car battery can short out internally and ack as you discribe and car won,t even jump start unless you remove battery cables from battery and attach directly to cables.

have battery checked, if it has an internal short boosting it won`t start it. also check battery cable connections at both ends for corrosion.

My car will not start. The battery is new and has a full charge and turns everything on when I turn the key but when I try to start it, it will not do anything not even clicking noise.

if the battery is good it is NOT the alternator. the alternator charges the battery, if it won`t start with a new battery the alternator does nothing to affect the situation. check voltages at the starter motor connections for proper voltages even the wires that the ignition switch supplies power to. if you have proper voltages at the starter you can try hitting the starter while someone tries to start the car. if it starts the starter is worn internally and will have to be replaced.

Battery and alternator replaced about a year ago. dash board battery light flashing on and off for a day (diagnostics showed everything okay). next day the ABS light, then seatbelt light came on and head...

Have a load test done on the battery for a failing cell. Check the condition and tension of the drive belt.. Head lights suggest a failing battery.

2003 mazda tribute, occasionally won't start. fuel pump replaced about 1 month ago. bad starter?

Many batteries may only last around three years. Check battery voltage at rest before starting. Any voltage in the low 12v range may be a sign of a faulty battery. If low voltage present, then perform a parasitic drain test:1) Disconnect battery POSITIVE terminal and connect ammeter in series, between battery positive terminal and positive lead.
DO NOT START THE VEHICLE!!

2) With all vehicle doors closed, alarm off, lights off, radio off, and all other accessories off, wait for around 20 minutes and then read the ammeter. A healthy system should read about 0.03 amps and little more. If reading more, then the vehicle could be suffering a parasitic amp drain, and you will need to locate this issue.

3) Reconnect battery when finished.

If no major parasitic drain present, yet low battery voltage then:

4) With vehicle started, check the voltage charge from the alternator. Connect voltmeter to battery terminals and take reading. A healthy system should be charging in the range of 14volts or down to around 13.5 volts. If reading around 12 volts only, then check and replace alternator.

My 2003 BMW X5 3.0d occasionally won't start after

Whilst it Sounds electrical it can still be the fuel line with air in it, however also Chk yr coil, Solenoid, battery connections, and starter motor connections. It could be something to do with the main power line. cheers

My 2003 cadillac deville makes 2-3 clicks then it starts, what could that be?

2 possible problems could be low charge on the battery (if it's the original battery it's definitely time for a new 1) a slick serpentine belt could also cause a low charge on the battery. A bad starter will require more and more energy to start the car until eventually it won't start the car at all.

My 2003 KiA sedona, acts like the battary wants to die and then suddenly it starts, has been doing this for 3 days.

1st: Battery needs to be checked (no weak or dead cells) then fully charged.
2nd: If battery is good and fully charged, the problem could be excessive amp draw from the starter, a starter draw test would determine if the starter is drawing too much battery power.

Intermittent operation, sometimes it starts fine, then it will act like low battery - battery is new and alternator is fine ie; charging system is full and active.

Take to Autozone or Oreillys for a starter draw test. Sometimes the starter will have a bad place and will not energize to spin the starter.
Another possibility is the Throttle Position Sensor which is located on the airhorn. This balances the fuel and spark systems for the gas pedal. When you start the engine it gives you the base idle and must work with the cold start system.

4th starter in 1 1/2 years on a 2002 sable

Ask the mech to dissassemble an old starter if it is not turned in for a core. If it is an oil leak are you using a lot of oil to keep it up to the full mark on dipstick. The copper windings in the starter may be soaked with oil, and the oil will attract road grime and dirt and be so clogged that the brushes cannot contack windings and clog up the whole works. Check to see if the valve cover gaskets are leaking down onto starter, they may have vibrated a little loose and just need tightened or replaced. Can really be the only thing that would go wrong with the starter, unless your battery is way to small or way to big. Check CCA, Cold cranking amps with the owners manual for replacement battery size.
