Valve lifters or push rods need replacing or tightening. Refer to repair manual before servicing.

Lifters pushrods

Hi Jack, Is the sound constant through the entire rev range or does it come and go? If the knocking is constant there is a probability it is caused by incorrect and loose valve adjustments. If the sound comes and goes it will most likely be a defective bearing, if the sound is from the top of the engine, it could be a dudgeon pin bearing (Otherwise known as a small end bearing) It connects the piston to the connecting rod. However there are many other components which may result in similar sounds. Regards John

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer with a knocking sound coming from the engine. Was told I could be the timing chain. But it's not. What else could be making a loud knocking sound? Thanks.

If your truck has the 4.6 or 5.4 V8 then you know it has two timing chains. The lifters could be causing the knocking noise. If it sounds like it's coming from the top then I would suspect lifters. If it sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine then I would suspect main or rod bearings.

Engine making a loud knocking sound

is the loud knocking sound coming from the top section, or the bottom section of the engine, if it's from the bottom, it could be a connecting rod, that is going bad, also if it's from the top of the engine, could be in the rocker arm assembley, this is where your valve spring, rockers, and retainers, and tips of valves are located, also have someone to see if the knock sensor is bad, normally , these are located not to far from the crankshaft pulley up from the bottom of engine.

Loud engine knock sounds like theconnecting rods in a 3.5L v-6 2002 trooper

If the engine knock is coming from deep inside the engine, the I agree, the rod is knocking.
If the sound is coming from closer to the top, it could be a valve lifter or push rod you are hearing. This isn't as bad, they last longer and synthetic oil or oil treatment helps.
If this doesn't happen all the time, if it's occasional or you hear a pinging noise, you could just have a bad knock sensor.
