Question about 1987 Toyota Celica

1 Answer

Idle and gear shifting 1987 celica automatic

The car makes a loud buzzing sound when the car is started cold. The sound goes away when the car warms up. The car idles rough in reverse and drive but is hardly noticeable except when you press the brakes. Also, when driving on the freeway the car seems to struggle to accelerate at times and change gears. Please help!

I would suggest hat you replace the timing belt. The noise that you hear is the belt.

If your timing belt is stretched, it will flap and rattle when cold, and the noise will subside when the engine warms up. Also, if the belt is noisy, it is indeed stretched. A stretched belt will cause the engine to run slightly "out of time", and you performance will be compromised. Replace the belt, that should fix you right up.

I have a 1990 toyota celica when its cold the idle goes from bout 1000 to 2000 back and forth check engine light is on what cold its be or where should i start

Faulty engine temperature sensor ?? On a cold start the temperature sensor should detect a cold engine and give a signal to the ecu to increase fuel ratio until the engine has warmed up. sounds like faulty sensor to me.

What does it mean when the car jerks when you put it into gear?

The car pulls suddenly hard in forward or reverse direction at the moment you change gears.

Camshaft sensor problems

If the sensor detects a problem, it sends a trouble code to the ECM and your "check engine" light will come on. IMO, your symptom sounds like "cold engine" issue. Myself, our 98 Toyota Rav4 will idle rough and engine stalls when put in drive, but the problem goes away when temperature shows the engine had warmed up to operating temperature. FYI the temperature sensor monitors the radiator coolant temperature. Normal engine temperature is when coolant reaches 120 degree fahrenheit. At around 130 to 140 degrees fahrenheit, the coolant thermostat opens to let radiator coolant flow from "bypass" mode to "enter radiator" mode. If it takes longer than 10 minutes for your engine to warm up, its possible the coolant thermostat is stuck in open "enter radiator" mode. When thermostat is close, coolant radiator bypass the radiator to speed up engine warm up, but if its stuck in open, it will take longer to warm up the engine. Another factor is ambient temperature. If its cold below 50 fahrenheit, it will take longer to warm up the engine.

My 2008 Chrysler 300 Limited has rough idle on cold starts

#1 - do you change your antifreeze every year? #2 - let your vehicle competely warm up before putting your engine under load. If you've got kids, go through starting the car safely step-by-step and send them out to start it - that's how my grandpa got me interested in cars!

Vibration at idle

it may be idle control sensor or a bad mas air flow sensor--maf sensor in otherwords. or could be engine misfire at cold temp. start. only time when cold? or does run better when warm? try warming engine to operating temperature before driving,if problem removes it's self after warm up,up grade gas to 93 octane for 1 tank full. then see if problem goes away. it's cold where you are right? if so the fuel needs to be at least midgrade 89 octane fuel because 87 octane fuel will not start your honda correctly at cold temps. in cold weather 93 or super gas octane will start ,no problem, low octane fuel sometimes gels, or freezes at low temps. if in warm climate, change the fuel filter, add fuel injector cleaner to your fuel tank[preferablly lucas fuel treatment] this will lube your fuel injectors and give better fuel mileage. thank you for choosing fixya.com
