Cable is not terribly difficult to change, but may not help with the problem. But do it first, then have code check done. Is cable frayed or not moving freely in casing? If binding it may just need lube.

won't hurt to remove IAC and clean it off. Don't turn plunger while cleaning and remember to spray out the passageway in the air inlet as well. Be careful that the small "o" ring does not get lost. Also check for vaccuum leaks at hoses and manifold and make sure you are getting a good healthy spark. (Ive actually modified mine to use a GM HEI coil,,,nasty big spark, but a bit of an "invention"...uses a spark plug, a listerine bottle cap, some gell body filler and some mods to the rotor to eliminate cross fire). Getting sidetracked...make sure your ignition system is in really good shape... any spark "leakage" is enough to put fire out in a cylinder under load. Test components with a good volt/ohmeter and make sure everything is within range. If you read the stuff up here, you will find that too many people just start changing everything in sight (and never find the problem). With all the electronics involved, good testing is very important!

1996 jeep grand Cherokee. It has 221,000 miles on it and when put into gear it wants to stall. Is this the torque converter itself or could it be the torque converter solenoid?

Try this.

Engine stalling and rough run issue at low speeds

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
.

My grand cherokee stalls when shifted in reverse. It dies immediately. this is an intermittent problem. I was told it was a solenoid in the trans controlled by the transmission ecm.

I had a similar problem with my gc 4.0. It would stall when shifting from reverse to drive but not all the time. Also erratic gear changing up and down and slipping. I took it to a garage and had the transmission filter and fluid changed (but it may be something some people can do there self if mechanically minded) And this cured the problem and have alot smoother gears. I did use the Jeep ATF +4 which was recommended not dex 2 so fingers crossed i dont have any more problems.

My 1997 jeep grand cherokee cuts off while driving or wont crank

If you have the 4.0l inline 6 and you mean buy "cuts off" that the engine stalls at the stop light or refuses to start from time to time...this engine has a well know problem with the crank position sensor, if it is bad or the connection loose or incorrect, you will have this problem

1994 jeep cherokee linkage

Problem sounds like an internal pressure problem not a cable. If you are able to shift into all gears using the shifter, the linkage is being moved properly. It cannot "come out of gear" by way of the shifter.
In reality, if you were able to manually put the shift lever on the transmission into any particular gear without any shift cable at all attached, it would stay in that selected position forever till you got under there and moved it again. Depending upon what transmission you are using you may have a throttle cable running between the trans and throttle lever on the throttle body...this may have something to do with your problem but would also affect shift points. Any electronic shift controls are also suspect at this point. have it checked by a competent shop. In not being there myself, I can only offer my thoughts on what I would test going into the problem...after testing a better evaluation can be made. Good luck...Hope it's something simple.

98 jeep grand cherokee limited 4.0 litre. starts up, during warm up process engine will idle irradically and stall out. starts back up and does the same thing. no check engine light on. cleanrd throttle...

Does this thing have a throttle body that looks like a computer-controlled carburetor?

If so, start motor and verify that it behaves irratically and then stalls.

then, spray WD-40 liberally around base of throttle body where tb meets intake manifold.

Start motor...

Does the problem go away, at least whilst for a little while?

Yes?

You gotta vacuum leak. Replace gasket under TB and tighten bolts to factory spec.
