Hi I was wondering how to remove the rear drum off my car? I have heard many people speak of differant methods such as a prising a retaining clip off then it should slide off, others saying that i will have to remove the whole hub to remove the drum and others as basic as, take the wheel off and it should just fall away.... I am utterly stuck as what to do as i do not know who is correct, any help would be greatly appriciated (:
Thanks
Jake
The main question is what country you are in and the type of car, if you take the wheel off and can't see anything holding the drum on then it should pull straight off (with a bit of wiggling) after you jar the drum with a soft faced hammer or a dead blow hammer on the edge close to the back edge: this would work for a rear wheel drive in Australia
Im from the UK, and its a Ford Focus 1.6 (2006 Mk2 (Front Wheel Drive)) I have tried the hammer method to loosen it, but it is completely stuck, i am unsure if there is anything else to do.... are you sure that the hub is separate to to the drum
mostly with fully floating axles the hub and drum are one piece
that means that you have to remove the axle ( 8 studs )
pull then axle
then undo the axle nuts in the hub and then the hub and drum will come off
don't have topaz. maybe escort will help guide you.
Section 04-02: Suspension and Wheel Hubs, Rear
1996 Escort, Tracer Workshop Manual
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Wheel Bearing and Hub Assembly
NOTE: Wheel bearings are not serviceable and should therefore be replaced as an assembly with the wheel hub (1104).
Removal
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
Remove the hub grease cap (1131) from the wheel hub.
If equipped with disc brakes, remove the rear disc brake caliper (2552) and rear disc brake rotor (2C026). Refer to Section 06-04 for the removal procedure.
If equipped with drum brakes, remove the two brake drum screws and the brake drum (1126).
Unstake the rear axle wheel hub retainer (4B477) securing the wheel hub to the rear wheel spindle (4A013). Remove and discard the rear axle wheel hub retainer.
Full Floating Axles
To remove the drums from full floating rear axles, use the Axle Shaft Removal & Installation procedure in Section 7. Full floating rear axles can readily be identified by the bearing housing protruding through the center of the wheel.
Semi-Floating Axles
Raise and support the rear end on jack stands.
Remove the wheel.
Pull the drum from the brake assembly. If the brake drums have been scored from worn linings, the brake adjuster must be backed off so that the brake shoes will retract from the drum. The adjuster can be backed off by inserting a brake adjusting tool through the access hole provided. In some cases the access hole is provided in the brake drum. A metal cover plate is over the hole. This may be removed by using a hammer and chisel.
You may have to back off the automatic adjuster before you can pull the drum from the brake assembly
The only trick is banging it off. Drums are known to be "frozen" on or stuck. Honestly, the only way to get them off when they are stuck is to carefully hammer it off. Below is what is required to remove and replace the drum....and a picture of your system:
Removal & Installation
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
Remove the wheels.
Remove the brake drum from the axle hub.
To install:
Install the brake drum.
Install the rear wheels, tighten the wheel lug nuts.
1.Release parking brake. 2. Apply the brake pedal at least 10 times. 3. Raise and support vehicle with jack stands, etc. 4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. 5. Remove the lock ring and the caulking nut from the spindle. 6. Remove the drum from the spindle. Note: Pull the drum straight off the spindle.
There is an opening on the inside for adjusting the tension,It's under a rubber cap.You can use a screw driver to make the adjustment
You will literally have to take a rubber mallet and beat on them all the way around until they work themselves loose enough to remove them by hand. You won't damage them as long as you use a rubber mallet.
make sure handbrake is off take wheel off hit the drum with a mallet not steel,as it will brake, hit on outter diametter face of drum, try and rotate as you twist off
