I have a rattling under the hood that stops once I come to a stop and idle for about 5 seconds. My mechanic says it's lifter sticking inside the engine.

Since it is impossible to diagnose a rattle from a keyboard I would suggest u starting looking for components that seem loose when u grasp them, u may have to get under the cat to do this. What does the rattle sound like, loud like metal hitting metal or softer?

SOURCE: loud rattling noise in dashboard

I had the same problem. I took apart the dash a thousand times, searching for the issue. It turns out you're right, it's the hood "hinge" bolts. Just place some rubber bushings on them, tighten them up, and maybe wrap some teflon tape around them, it goes right away!

SOURCE: 2003 Chevy Impala Service Traction Sytem show on Dash

I can't answer the question about the gas fumes, but I had the same problem last year with the "Service Traction Sysytem" message and the Trac and ABS lights coming on in my Impala. Mine turned out to be because of a bad wheel bearing, that was causing the ABS and traction system not to work. I'm not sure if you've experienced this, but another thing that would happen with mine was that I would go to brake and have a hard time depressing the brake pedal, almost like it was pushing back. That is the point when the Trac and ABS lights came on.

Check under the hood before you try to remove the dash, it is a 14 hour job for a home mechanic with no skills to speak off and you must discharge the air system.

There is a noise being made by a part under the hood of my 2006 Chevy Malibu. I don't know what the part is, and am having a hard time describing where it's located. Is there a website that has a diagram...

If it's a rattle, it's a bracket on the exhaust system, had the same problem, if it is near the windshield, it could be the trim panel that is between the hood and windshield, had that problem and if it's a popping noise when driving and turning, the intermediate steering shaft is bad, had that problem twice already.

Rattling noise

Try the cupholder on the drivers side. Then, if it's like the issue I had, push the plastic around the dimmerswitch wheel in toward the rest of the dashboard. THAT'S where the rattle was for my car. Also a 40mph and above issue. If that doesn't do it, try putting pressure on different parts of the dash to eliminate the fitting together of the molded plastic as the issue. Other then that, I'd have to be there to see what it could be!
