Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

1999 Jeep Grande Cherokee starts then stalls in about 3 seconds

It starts without any problems, but then just shuts off after about 3 seconds. One thing that started happening at the same time, that the driver door won't unluck with the remote, nor do the windows work with the key in on position. I tried reading with a scan tool, but it just continues to say reading.... and never gets a reading. It seems like I am not able to comunicate with the PCM at all. Anybody have any ideas what might be the problem?

I check all the fuses in both the fuse panel and the PDC visually and didn't see any that were blown. I will test each one with a tester to make sure. Is there any specific fuse I should be checking? Are the fuses you are talking about in the PDC?

Check fuses in both locations & make sure that body ground is good at block, fenders & connection near computer. If still nothing, try disconnecting computer harness and inspect pins for any corrosion or burning. Sometimes just taking off and putting back in is enough to re-establish connection.

Check fuses for computer one of them may have blown. Also check body ground.

Check your relays and if that is not the problem then find another ECM and try that about all I can say would cause the issue

the above answer is not necessarily true. A lot of the time the pcm is having a difficult time with the smart key chip. If you havent changed your key cylinder or your key, and even if you have, disconnect the battery negative terminal, while disconnected turn the key to the run position and let sit for at least 2 minutes. Then reconnect the negative terminal, unlock the driver door with the key or alarm remote, and try starting it. It should work just fine now, if not then try the pcm.

Losses key to 1999 jeep grand Cherokee. So I replaced entire steering column but jeep still shuts off in 3 seconds. Any suggestions?

Jeep has a chip in the key sounds like your anti theft is kicking in. The car will only run for a few seconds then shut off. I think it would require reprogramming of your computer. Some times company's on eBay can do the programming for a fraction of the cost

2000 jeep grande cherokee, will start if i jump it off, but when i give it gas, it idles down and stalls out

Check your charging system. Jumping will put a slight surface charge on the battery but that will only last as few minutes. If system is not charging, you will drop below operating voltage and the engine will then stall after disconnection jumpers.

199 Jeep cherokee stalls without warning

Does it start right back up after it stalls? make sure all conections are tight at fuel pump, sounds like it could be loosing ground at pump, or hot lead is loosing its connection at pump. Also fuel pump relay could be getting hot and quits working.

Broken cables in jeep. what are they?

They are your throttle body cables. You should really make sure that all cables are in proper working condition so you do not have a stuck throttle on you at sometime. It is a safety hhazard

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalling and not starting

Since you've replaced many of the usual suspects (fuel pump etc.) you might want to look into testing or simply replacing the crankshaft position sensor or the camshaft position sensor. If you intermittently lose one the these signals it would cause the problem you describe.
