It is one of the sensors on the front of the transmission most likely. To be sure you will have to have it diagnosed with a computer though.

I have a 2012 dodge avenger and need to replace the speed sensor, auto zone said that it replaces the speedometer cable, but I don't know where that is, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You

The speed sensor is in the transmission tailstock case. It will have a wiring harness plugged into it. Do not over tighten the new sensor. Apply Teflon paste to the threads.

The speedometer won't work and it went into limp mode. How do I fix this?

The most common cause is a faulty speed sensor in the transmission. Checking the engine computer for trouble codes should tell you what the problem is, or what to check.
Its also possible something has broken inside the trans causing the speed sensor not to function.

Where is the speed sensor located on a 1997 avenger dodge

I'm not 100% sure if you got the right sensor. What you need is the output speed sensor not the input. if your looking under the hood of your car it will be on the front of the transmission the input is directly above the TCM and the output will be about 6 inches up and to the right of that.
