Hand brake was on for several days, vehicle is not used much.

  • iris728 Mar 09, 2009

Drove it backwards in the garage, didn't like the sounds, noticed from skid marks only one wheel locked, but next to the garage wall so could not get wheel off, so have to get it out of the garage.
Reverse and low and as it exited the garage big bang and it freed.
Don't think it is a wear problem as only done 50Ks but we don't use it much, so in future will leave hand brake off when in garage.
    Thanks for your help

Did this start after having the hand brake on for an extended time or did it just happen after setting it for a short period of time.

Your rear brake shoes are stuck. The assembly is held togehter with spring which appy pressure to return your brake pads to there original position. The park brake uses a cable to pull the brake pads out to lock against the brake drum, this is where your problem is at. Sometimes pulling the tires off a hitting around the outside of the drums will free the brakes. Other times driving a few feet will do the trick I would try this first. This is a problem you encounter with older vehicles that have higher milage and is a sign that your brake hardware is getting old. You can find online manuals on most vehicles for free at if you want to take on replaceing them yourself. Keep on mind if you are going to have it apartanyway you can save money and trouble later by replacing the shoes, hardware and wheel cylinders at the same time.

Red Handbrake warning saying Apply handbrake and not starting

I familiar with this setup, but the car should start with the parking brake on. I could see it warning you if you try to move it with brake set, or maybe even shutting off engine then, but I would never think it would prevent engine from starting. Is this a stick shift or automatic. Make sure transmission is in neutral or park, clutch depressed.

How do I fixed if my car hand brake stuck 2001 toyota coralla manual

There are several things that can make a hand brake stick on. It possible the cable attached to the leaver has come off it guide. There is a cable running from each rear wheel to the handbrake leaver , a inner cable running through a outer housing , chick that the inner cable is free to move back and forward . if all the cables are free to slide adjust the rear brakes and hand brake as instructions . Slacken off the hand brake cable adjustment. Jack up the rear wheals and adjust the brake shoes till the brakes lock, then back off till the wheels are free to turn. Then pull the hand brake leaver on two clicks and adjust the hand brake cable till the rear wheels just start to bind, release the hand brake leaver and check the wheels are free to turn.

My red handbrake symbol keeps flashing what does this mean please

The handbrake light is usually not the handbrake light, it is a warning light for the whole braking system. You could have a problem with the abs system, low brake fluid in the master cylinder or brake pads worn down.
The brake fluid reservoir is easy to check, just lift up the hood and it should be right there mounted on top of the brake booster, in line where the brake pedal is.
The brake pads on modern vehicles have sensors that warn you when they need replacement, so have them checked.
Finally of course, you could have a loose wire on the handbrake warning switch which is mounted at the base of the handbrake, or if you're very lucky, you might just need to drop the handbrake just a fraction more before you drive off.

How to adjust parking brake on 1993 chevy lumina ?

  • Adjustments

  1. Apply service brake pedal three times with a force of approximately 175 lbs.

  2. Fully apply and release parking brake three times. Full application may require two pedal strokes.

  3. Raise and support vehicle, then mark relationship between wheel and axle flange.

  4. Check parking brake pedal assembly for full release as follows:

    1. Turn ignition switch to On position.

    2. If ``Brake\'\' lamp is illuminated, operate manual brake release and pull downward on front parking brake cable to remove slack from pedal assembly.

  1. Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies, then install two lug nuts to retain each rotor assembly.

  2. If two parking brake levers on both calipers are not against lever stops on caliper housings, check for binding in rear cables and/or loosen cables at adjuster until both left and right levers are against their stops.

  3. Tighten parking brake cable at adjuster until either the left or right lever begins to move off the stop, then loosen adjustment until lever moves back barely touching stop.

  4. Operate parking brake several times to check adjustments. A firm pedal feel should be obtained by pumping pedal two full strokes and rear wheels should not rotate forward when parking brake is fully applied.

  5. Install wheel and tire assemblies, aligning marks made in step 3.

Why is brake warning light is on

It can be issue with master cylinder or the problem is there is still some air there in the system, that has to be bleed.Or else the parts replaced are not aligned properly/.I suggest everything back.

Brake not releasing

here are a couple of suggestions:

E-brake not releasing--
- The e-brake is a mechanical brake not hydraulic as if you were to apply the brake pedal. If the e-brake is released but the brake will still not release this is usually a spring failure, the spring that releases the pads or shoes from the rear wheels. There is a cable going from the handbrake in the vehicle to the rear brakes. There are other things that could cause the problem so checking the brakes to see what is going on is the first step.

If you have a "brake" light on the dash--
- if you think that your brake is still on because your light is still on then this may not be the case. Many things cause the light to come on including (things to check):
Brake fluid
Leaks in the system (check brake lines and bleeder valves on the calipers and/or wheel cylinders).
proportioning valve sensor (if you unplug the sensor and the light goes off, this is the culprit)
Brake pedal sensor
Master cylinder and/or booster

Brake pedal not releasing or returning--

master cylinder and/or booster
pad or shoes fused to rotor or drum (e.g. metal on metal--check)
brake pedal linkage or rod broken

--if non of these are the problem please redefine question--

Hope this helps!

A light came on my dash of an exclamation mark with a circle and brackets around it but only came on dull, not really bright. What does that mean? And can I damage anything by driving it? Thank you

That sounds a lot like a brake warning light. Check your brake fluid. Take it for a SLOW drive, and see if the brake pedal feels unusual at all (spongy, soft). Wind your windows down, turn off the radio, and listen for any unusual noises, like grating or screeching.

If your brakes fail, then yes, you can damage something by driving it- Starting is optional, stopping is mandatory.

Your handbrake doesn't run on any hydraulic systems, so if they fail, in an emergency, you can use the handbrake. Apply it slowly- pulling it up hard will most likely cause your brakes to lock- but you'll need to use a fair bit of force... Without getting into physics, your back brakes don't work anywhere near as well as your front brakes do.

Cant move gear selector. is there a sensor? after changing the brake pads,i pumped up the brakes, tryed to go for a test drive, cant get truck gear handle to move.

Make sure the brake light switch didn't come loose when you were pumping the brakes... that switch also releases the shifter. It should be located up on the brake pedal arm under the dash
