2001 vw passat exhaust problem??

I have a 2001 vw passat, sounds like the exhaust has a hole in it, but had someone check it out and found nothing wrong w/ the exhaust. It seems the sound is coming from something in the motor...
Any idea on what would make it sound like the exhaust but isn't?

That's what we're thinking...do you know if there is a hose or a plug at the base of it?? I went out and looked around earlier and I saw something's missing...but not sure what goes there. If it is a hose, what does it connect to?

I tried looking online for a diagram, but only found one of the top of the egr - not the bottom.

    Thanks for your help!

It could be the EGR system. tubes often rust out. good luck

EGR tubes that could leak exhaust have to be metal due to the heat. Flexible hoses would melt. Other rubber hoses would be to supply vacuum to the EGR system to help oerate the EGR valve.

The EGR valve opens while you are driving at steady speed with warm engine to send a small amount of exhaust gas back into the maniflod to help control emissions.

If you take a 3 ft piece of hose and put one end by your ear and the probe around the engine, you will find the leak. Be very careful of moving parts.

Here's a Focus EGR system. #2 is the EGR valve and #5 is the steel tube that rusts through due to the corrosive gases. This is not rocket science for any good tech.

SOURCE: VW Passat 2001: Exhaust emission warning lamp flashing. Manual says 'blinks if the catalyst can be damaged by misfires'. Any suggestions?

"Check engine light" EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! Do you want to shut it off??? After reading all of the negative comments and how much money Passat owners have spent due to this manufacturer's problem, I am going to save the day and save you $$$ by showing you how to "reset" the diagnostic computer which makes the "emissions workshop-check engine light come on! (This is the same thing the VW dealer will charge you hundreds of dollars to do.) To turn off the "Check Engine" (Emissions Workshop) light, simply follow these 5 basic steps:
1. Pop open the hood.
2. Insert the key in the ignition and turn without starting the engine until all of the dash indicators light and warning tones sound.
3. With the key still in the ignition, use a 10mm wrench or socket to loosen and completely disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery. Wait about 60 seconds before reconnecting.
4. Re-connect and tighten the negative (-) cable to the battery and close the hood.
5. Start the engine. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS GONE OUT!
If the light stays on, then there really is a problem. If it has turned off, be glad, but don't be surprised to see it come on again in a few weeks. If it comes on again, simply follow steps 1-5. Remember... This quick repair is for those who just can't stand looking at this light or afford to visit VW every time this light comes on. If you feel the need to service the vehicle, service the vehicle. I hope this has made your "NIGHTMARE" a little easier!!!

SOURCE: 2001 passat fuse box diagram

It would be easier if you mention what device you're working with and I can tell you what number location it's fuse is at. Symbols are only there to confuse the hell out of you, although it's true purpose is to be recognized as a global standard. Now if you want to make it easier for yourself, buying a Bentley's repair manual is the only way to go. I hate to tell you that there are no free manuals you can down load, it cost money and someones time to upload a manual just to share it freely on the net.

Cut them off is the simplest way but you must remember that you have o2 sensors that control your engines emissions and may affect the exhaust (emissions/smog tests) and by removing cats you check engine light may come on as a result so be cautious of this...
