If they both started at the same time, check for a vacuum leak under the hood. Listen fora sucing sound.
Sometimes I use a piece of hose as a listening device and hold one end to my ear and theother I probe arund all the vacuum lines and around the top of the engine.
If you are careful, you can spray a little starting fluid around suspect areas and see if the engine rpms flare up. Then you know you have a leak. Be careful, use sparingly only if hose method does not work.
A vacuum leak screw up your idle circuit by eaking too much air into the engine, and casue shifts to be erratic.

Good luck and report back. Please rate as fixya if this solves your problem.

What is the second drive gear for

The first one is over drive and the second is drive. It is best to just use overdrive when on the parkway and drive on slower back roads when there is hills and stop and go traffic. Overdrive is a higher gear.

Ford Taurus: rough idle in drive and reverse

it could be that the tick over is two slow in brive,,,
set it up to tickover at 850,,950 rpm (in drive)
or it could be a gear box fult like the drive plate has a crack in it,,,letting the torque converter slap about,,,
chech tick over first,,, bont adjust tick over in gear unless the brakes are held hard on,,,

its in the timing ...whenever you start it it sits and idles fine but when you go to put it in gear it dies...the timing needs to be repaired. its a guaranteed solution.
