I have 1998 Dodge Stratus. I had the ignition switch replaced because the ignition would stay on even though the car was turned off and key was removed. I would wake up in morning with battery drained. Now when I drive the car my x22Air Bagx22 light comes on, then the power windows will not work, then the heater and turn signals stop working. If I stop, turn off the car and turn back on, sometimes these features will work and sometimes they do not. Also, the prior owner told me (after my car battery was drained) that sometimes he would turn off the headlights and come back later to find that the headlights were actually turned back on and thus the battery was drained by the time he got in car to drive. Are these problems indicative of a bad alternator? What do you think the problem is?

headlight switch is overheating ... replace it be sure to check the plug on the harness making sure it did not melt. the design is poor too many wires going thru one switch. It will go bad again and again especially if you do alot of night driving or use your high beams alot.and by no means use any other headlights other then factory issue.

It could be But my guess is it is the safety netural switch could even be a starter you can test it but you need jumper wires with aligator clips, you can try turning on the lights and turn the key switch over and if the lights dim slightly then it means it is making contact and pulling volatage but not starting, if the lights don't dim slightly then it could be the safety netural switch. If you can work with jumper wires and a couple safety stands I can help you test it.

Testimonial: "thank you, only problem is what is safety netural switch and where located?"

I think you need to replace the Body Control Module (BCM), My newly replaced BCM (used) fixed my wiper problem but created a new problem which the left turn signal is not working now. Time to sell the van.

No, it would not be anything to do with the alternator.

My guess would be the body control module, or BCM-a minicomputer under the dash that controls a lot of electrical functions- lights, cabin controls, etc. Not sure if the bcm has anything to do with the air bags, though.

I first was thinking that somehow a part of the fuse panel (the part that has fuses for the things you said would not work) was not being sent power from the ignition switch. Those fuses are only sent power to them and their circuits when the ignition is in accessory or run. But that doesn't explain the headlights coming on by themselves...that is why I am now thinking your problem may be the BCM. You might need a pro to sort it out. Also check with the dodge dealer if any reprogramming is necessary when replacing the BCM. It's up under the dash somewhere, maybe behind the glove box. You would need a voltmeter or multi-meter to do any diagnosing. Also a wiring diagram, and a flow chart or troubleshooting steps...gets pretty complicated...it can be diagnosed to kind of see if the bcm is the problem, but that is often left to a shop or the dealer. Your car has some strange electrical problems. Did that have anything to do with the previous owner selling it?

I have a 97 dodge stratus. It won't start. Tried

Make sure it's getting fuel. Try using some ether or starting fluid. If it rumbles to life but doesn't stay running then there's a problem with the fuel delivery system. i.e.... Fuel pump, clogged filter, pressure regulator.... If the ether doesn't change the results you are getting now then it's a fire or sensor problem. Ignition coil, relays, sensors not signaling, PCM... I wish you luck. Let us know how it turns out

My 1998 dodge stratus needs to be jump started everyday, what could be the problem

Need to get a meter on that car, auto zone will do it,make sure it's charging.
I am thinking the voltage regulator is not in the alternator.Think it's in the control computer. If it goes bad ,the car won't charge.Instead of buying a computer you can also use an older style (say 1980's) external electronic regulator.have to get a pigtail from a parts store ,hook up 2 wires to the alt. Cap and seal the old wires that used to go to the ECM. Works fine and won't go bad again.

I was driving and then lost power. The car just cut off. The dome light still works, the power locks, windows, ignition beep and heater are still working as well. But when I turn the key, nothing happens....

check the large main fuses. check all the fuses in the fuse panel under the hood. check fuses that should be hot with engine running/cranking. ignition switch?
