Noise when turning the key to start my 2005 Pontiac Montana

Just recently I have noticed a noise when turning the ignition in my 2005 Pontiac Montana minivan. It sounds like it is coming from the drivers side rear area around the sliding door or the gas cap area. The sound only occurs when turning the key in the ignition to on. It actually happens before actually starting the car. Any ideas? I have 105000+ miles on it and it's been a great car, my second montana to date. First a 1998 and now the 2005.

Nope, not that. We looked at that. The locks work fine. We opened and closed the doors and not the same noise. We've owned this van since brand new and never heard this noise until earlier this week or maybe late last week. I have had a gas smell at times while driving but have attributed that to other cars in front of me, etc. but could it have anything to do with something in or around the gas tank?

We thought maybe something with the auto leveler too, but it seems to be fine. I'll give it a couple more days and then off to the dealer I go. Thanks for your help.

I just figured out something else about what might be causing this sound. When I turn the heater knob from defrost/feet to the face/feet setting the noise happens then too. Is there some connection from the heater controls to something in the rear drivers side that would be possibly broken and making this noise? Maybe a fan trying to turn on/off or something. Any ideas?

Might be the fuel pump. should sound like an electric motor running, whirring sound. like a very quiet dough mixer.
