Maybe he was trying to say that there is problem with a speed sensor, namely Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). The VSS signal transmits vehicle speed to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which uses the signal to control engine and transmission operating conditions. It also sends a signal to the speedometer to display vehicle speed. So mybe there are some wiring problems or VSS just faulty so, PCM no longer receives the VSS signal. In this case it puts the transmission into a default mode to prevent taransmission damage and it affects the vehicle performance
So most probaly VSS and wiring needs to be checked/replaced
Hope that helps
Good Luck

Hi..I would have to say the most likely problem is with the
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). The VSS signal transmits
vehicle speed to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
which uses the signal to control engine and transmission
operating conditions. It also sends a signal to the speedometer
to display vehicle speed. The Vehicle Speed Sensor is located on
transaxle, at the rear of the engine. I would check the harness
connector to be sure it is clean and connected tightly. Also check
the wiring for cuts and chaffing. When the PCM no longer receives
the VSS signal, it puts the transmission into a default mode to
prevent transmission damage, hence the hard, high shift points.
check it out..
thank u..

What are any additional engine codes? It is helpful to know corresponding errors to find the source of the light. Could be a multitude of problems. Any other lights come on with the Failsafe?

The problem can be with 2 foot driving, one on the throttle and one on the brake at the same time. What happens is that when you have your foot on the brake pedal at the same time you have your second foot on the throttle it is possible that the ECM will re-calibrate the throttle pedal position sensor while the throttle is slightly depressed and then when the throttle pedal is actually released it will cause a fault code for pedal position out of range. Any codes for either throttle pedal position or throttle position sensor will automatically cause fail safe mode. There is a software update that corrects this but most drivers use one foot and will never see the problem. The stop and go traffic comment prompted the question as that is almost always when the problem occurs.

Having all the warning lights on and driveability affected to the point of power steering being disrupted points to a CAN network fault between modules. If no check engine light or other warnings remained after restarting - Any pedal or throttle position codes would certainly have left at least the check engine light on.

It's time for a proper code scan to determine exactly where the fault lies.

You can try a ECM reset by REMOVING THE GROUND FROM THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL of the battery. Then touch the ground back to the battery negative a few times.

This will clear the ECM manually.

What is fail safe mode for transmission in 2002 dodge stratus? What could cause fail safe mode to activate with the transmission

I believe fail safe mode is usually direct drive which in most 4 speed transmissions is third gear. As far as what could cause this could be many things, electrical, clutch leakage or transmission oil bypassing the clutch that the transmission wants to engage, clutch slippage which could be the friction disks in a certain clutch that don't have any friction material left on them. IE like a brake pad the friction material on the pad once it is gone the brakes don't operate very good you have metal to metal contact you need to change your brakes. same concept. Are their any codes? Did the check engine light or transmission light come on? If you have a light try and see what the light says by scanning the computer. this should give you a good place to start.

I have a Mercedes S class diesel saloon built in 2007 and the car has developed a fault wherby the engine management comes on (but not always). When it comes on it sometimes goes into limp mode and...

engine manage lights and limp mode are activated from the engine AND the transmission faults
may be the mechanic is looking in the wrong area for the fault as it could be a TCM or wiring problem in the transmission
discuss it with MB headquarters technicians as the local shop may not have the experience to fix problems

My 1999 clk 320 suddenly will not shift out of 3rd gear, its been going good for 184000 miles and all service has been done by a mercedes mechanic

sounds like the transmission is in limp home mode where it won't shift out of second gear. this is a fail safe mode. If the check engine light is on too then its probably not seeing one of the speed sensors in the transmission. Just need to have the codes pulled in the transmission control module.

BMW x5 warning light fiasco

Hello This is Mike,,

Sometimes.... Sometimes this will take care of some of those faults and codes, and it only takes a few minutes to do. I know your problem is not exact as this reset method says, but however you would be amazed on this fixes a lot of things, it like a cheap way to reset computer and fixes a lot of things back to default mode. Try it and let me know. Mike

IT'S VERY EASY TO RESET THE TRANSMISSION'S COMPUTER. HOLD GAS PEDAL DOWN. TURN THE KEY TO THE NUMBER TWO. CONTINUE TO HOLD THE GAS PEDAL DOWN FOR THIRTY SECONDS.RELEASE THE GAS PEDAL AND PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL FOR TEN SECONDS. NOW YOU CAN TURN THE VEHICLE ON. THAT SHOULD TAKE IT OUT OF SAFE MODE

Enigine fail safe mode

I encountered the same problem, my engine fail safe mode light came on and shut the car down. I took my car to my mechanic and he found the solution to the problem. The car needed a throttle body cleaning and the fuel filter needed to be replaced. After having my truck serviced my mileage increased from 14.6 mpg to 15.4 mpg

Sounds like you maybe having a sensor failure (engine). A computer diagnostic can be performed at the vehicle dealership to determine what caused the fail safe mode to activate.
