Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on. The over heating could be the cause of the light coming on, further testing is required.

I'm currently interested in a 1996 volvo 960; without having much volvo knowledge, what do you suggest I investigate and or what type of repairs are common after 140000 miles on the car

Does the current owner of the vehicle have well kept service records? If he does, ask him if the timing belt was changed on this car. And ask him to show you the service records. The timing belt should have already been replaced, but if not, you will need to replace it immediately. Along with water pump, seals, and balance shaft belt. If the vehicle has an interference motor, and the timing belt breaks going down the road, it has the potential to ruin the motor. The timing belt on a Volvo is not for the beginner, and most shops will not even touch it. Tech will need special tools to lock down the cams, or risk even bigger issues. Also, do a visual inspection, paying close attention to the undercarriage, looking for oil leaks. Volvo's are great cars, but the routine maintenance can be costly.

What is the check gauges light

CHECK GAGES light (1) indicates a potential engine failure(low oil pressure, low coolant, coolant overheating) has occurred.
· Check gages and shut down engine. Gages should read as follows: Oil pressure 5 to 10 psi (34 to 69 kPa) at idle; Water Temp gage below 230 degrees (110 C).
· Check engine oil level (Para 2-11) if OIL PRESS gage indicates low reading. Check coolant level (Para 2-11) if Water Temp gage indicates high reading. Notify Unit Maintenance if levels are low.

If CHECK ENGINE light (2) is on, check engine oil pressure gage (3) and water temperature gage (4). If both indicate normal, proceed with mission and then notify Unit Maintenance. If either one does not indicate normal, stop engine immediately and notify Unit Maintenance

Alternator is not charging my battery in my 1996 volvo 960. how do I troublshoot before replacing the alternator?

Check whether the groundings to the body and engine are good. Try to install good grounding cables connected directly from the battery to the various body and engine areas. It is not advisable to replace alternator with higher amperage. Please stick to the original specification if new alternator is needed.
