Question about 1994 Toyota Pickup

93 toyota pickup 22 re motor, idles very rough

I just installed a new timing chain (after market ), the chain only had a single timing mark top and bottom instead of two timing marks top and one mark bottom like oem chains. installed chain making sure timing marks were correct. also replaced MAF senor because old one was damaged. everything runs good except idles very rough. checked timing three times with a jumper wire at 5 degrees BTDC and rechecked with jumper wire off at 12 degrees BTDC. also checked for vacumm leaks and correct hose placement. checked PVC valve, egr and egr module. all seem normal. engine light came on once while driving. found code 71, which is egr system malf. my question is... is the egr faulty or could after market chain, even properly enstalled be off slightly causing it to run rough

Where is the timing marks of toyota 2.7 vvti engine

Timing marks are always in the same place regardless or make. Engine timing marks are a notch on the crankshaft pulley with marks on a casting or metal plate next to the crankshaft pulley.

Camshaft marks are on one (single cam) or both (twin cam) cylinder head pulleys with a fixed mark on top of or central to the pulleys.

Probably the timing chain has jumped a cog. Aim a timing light at the timing mark and ensure that it stays in one place when idling. If it jumps around erratically the timing chain has jumped. If not that it could be the fuel filter, plugs and or wires, etc.

what happened when it went from running to not? Pretty sure you have a timing belt, not chain, and its behind the fan motor and all those belts, behind the black plastic housing. You have to remove all of your hoses and fan blade, then housing bolts, to see if its your timing belt.

Timing chain marks for 1994 toyota pickup 2.4

  1. Slide the sprocket over the key on the crankshaft. Place the timing chain on the sprocket with the single bright link aligned with the timing mark on the sprocket.
  2. Place the timing chain on the cam sprocket so that the link BETWEEN the two bright links is aligned with the timing mark on the sprocket. Make certain the chain is positioned within the dampers (guides).

Get the timing checked. If it is off over 5-8 degrees, you may have a timing chain that has jumped a tooth. This is a common issue with the 22 RE with high mileage. Let me ask you this, and this may narrow down my solution...Is there a slight "rapping noise" in the front of the engine? If so, the timing chain guids may be worn or broken. Get the timing checked, and advise me of the findings.
